high temp while playing on GA-X58A-UD3R - intel i7 960
« on: December 03, 2010, 04:38:42 pm »
hey all
i just noticed the core temp report.
i closed gta iv and the temps were high...
43 min to 72c max
so i'm wondering..is the stock cpu cooler that bad?
sure ill buy a better one with that temps.. I was thinking of Cooler master v6 gt, but is it really worth it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

here is my system:

Personally I think you can't beat the Noctua Coolers I have the NH-D14 which provides excellent CPU Cooling and very quietly too.

Although I run an AMD System and the Phenom ii x6 1090T I have temperatures around the low 20's peaking in the low 30's when doing anything extreme. Even when I pushed my CPU to 4.2GHz it didn't go above 34C.

Yes I can back up what absic is saying there.  That Noctua he's got is very quiet and keeps the temperatures at rock bottom.

You can adjust the height of the fan to give you some more space  but if your modules have an attachment on top like the Corsair Dominators you can remove that to give you enough clearance.

yes they have an attachment on top that's why i asked  :)
but i guess if i can just remove that without doing any damage to stick, should not be a prob.
Thanks Dark

Hi again,

yes the Noctua NH-D14 is a moster cooler but they do make slightly smaller versions too. Whilst DM is partially right about the fan being adjustable the actual aluminium fins of the cooler do cover the first couple of slots on my motherboard.

You might like to check through this thread: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,3382.0.html where I have posted some images of this cooler.

ye..its huge looks cool too ;D
btw today i updated my bios version to fc. I had the fa version and the CPU FAN MODE Option was on PWM
But after i loaded optimized defaults that went to auto.. to be honest i don't know what those settings stand for cause there is no descriptions available :
AUTO
VOLTAGE ?
PWM   ?
so i was wondering about which one is the best..?
Also has anyone noticed any differences between fa>fc version as for cpu temps?

PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation and is another alternative way of fan spped control. The older way was to just drop the voltage but that had drawbacks as in generally a fan wont start below 7.0V. even though you can keep it turning at less volts.
The PWM option allows the BIOS to control the speed of the fan according to the temperature.

AMD and the I7 are different animals. I have a i7 965 extreme and on air if I had that at 100% load I would be sitting at around 85c +. So I went for the next best thing and watercooled and haven't looked back. I now have temps in the low 60s (degrees) running LinX 20runs at 25000 and that's @4.4Mhgz from stock 3.2.

IMO if you want to cool it go water, it's a bit expensive for the outlay but, once you have it you will always have it! Glad I did it!!  ;D

;D indeed you have a beast for a pc  :D
ye i thought about water cool too.. air or water tho, im 100% sure that it will run at lower temps related to stock!
i dont have a prob spending some time for some research on that one  ;)

Yeh of course when your sitting there just idling away your temps will be fine lol, but as you know these chips are power hungry and require a bit more voltage to oc. But that said even at stock, once that chip goes under load, you will notice the temps soar....So I only have the cpu under water and I have all my water cooling OUTSIDE my case with just the 2 tubes going into my case to the cpu. The best thing I did there was a couple of koolance quick disconnects about 6 inches outside the case so I can totally isolate my water cooled setup, works a treat. Just food for thought  ;)

Couldn't agree more especially with the Intel chip and overclocking! I have got mine all watercooled but have done the same as you with the quick connects which does make life a lot easier especailly as I have a lot of fixed pipework.
