GA-P55-UD4P Video card link width

GA-P55-UD4P Video card link width
« on: January 11, 2010, 04:01:25 am »
A couple of days ago, I finished putting together my new machine specs as follow:

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P Motherboard
Intel Core i5 cpu
Gigabyte GV-NX96T1GHP 9600gt video card (located in the TOP slot)
Lite-on Blu-ray drive
2x 1gb OCZ Platinum ddr3 memory (1600mhz)
OCZ Vertex Turbo 30gb SSD
450watt BFG Power Supply
Windows 7 32bit, fully updated
All the latest drivers for video card ect....
Onboard sound, 2nd Sata controller, and 1 NIC are disabled
Latest mother bios (F6), and latest video card bios are installed.

and yes, the 2x4, the full 24pin atx connector are attached, and videocard power are all plugged in properly.

Pretty much the machine is VERY stripped down (I always build new machines very stripped down until i make sure things are right) until I get the video pci-e link width fixed.  It seems to be stuck at x8 link width and I have no idea why.  i've tried stepping hte pci-e frequency in random order and 1 by 1. With no luck. any ideas?  I put the video card into my Intel Core i7 machine that has the ga-x58-ud5 motherboard and it detects it just fine at x16 so I know its NOT the video card. I also tried another 9600gt video card I have, and it turned out the same way.  All utilities show the link width at x8, GPU-Z, CPU-Z, and the Nvidia system information.

I've tried emailing Gigabyte tech support, but it's been a week and the mail still hasnt even been processed.  What a joke

i have the same problem. i also have a Gigabyte mobo. it is the GA-P55-UD4 and when i installed a Radeon HD 5770 in the TOP PCI-E slot, on each power up of the pc, the video bus is either one of these:
x8, x1 or NONE (nothing shown on screen and systom will not start).

it never is x16.
but i heard x8 and x16 are VERY similar (maybe just a 1% difference between them), you can check it out.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Sorry that you have a problem but that is like most people that come on here. ;)

I am afraid that this is a typical scenario and is often complained about. In fact there have even been threads debating the closing of the Gigabyte Technical Support and just utilizing the forum as it is much more efficient. Personally I don't agree with shutting the tech support totally because sometimes they can be invaluable but I think the idea has some merit.

This problem has come up before and I will check into it but as OverflowURS said the difference is minor in real world terms between 16x and 8x. Even so that is not the point and it should function at the full speed. I will post again when I have done some digging.

Well after some checking I can't find any obvious solution but there are a couple of things to check. First make usre that you are using the x16 slot and that there is nothing in the x8 slot also because they share bandwidth. Second make sure the  BIOS is set to boot from the PEG device first. Sorry I can't help more than that.

Just wanted to chime in I'm experiencing the same problem with a P55A-UD4P rev. 1.0 and Nvidia GTX 260. It does work in x16 mode *sometimes*. However, it is often in x8 mode on resume from sleep, and sometimes on cold boot, seemingly randomly. I have seen x4, x1 mode before, too, though that is much more rare. Have tried many BIOS revisions including the current F15a beta to no avail. Any word on this?
