Could be a little while before we see AMD's Bulldozer CPU's
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:45:23 pm »
For those of you who are waiting for the first signs of the new AMD Bulldozer processors it looks as if you could be hanging on until the 3rd Quarter of next year.

Check this article for a bit more information: http://www.pcworld.com/article/210813/amd_to_ship_first_bulldozer_server_chips_in_q3.html

As usual another interesting bit of information that you have dug up there absic. I was under the impression that the first Bulldozer chips were to be released in  Q1 next year.

I think that is the general impression so I was a little surprised to see 3rd Quarter being stated. However, this is for the Server version of the processors as yet, there is no indication of when the general ones will be out.

If they are coming in Q1 I really would have expected to see some signs from the motherboard manufacturers but they all seem to be gearing up for Intel's Sandybridge and no immediate signs of the proposed socket AM3+ that the new AMD Processors are supposed to need.

I will of course, keep digging and who knows what I'll unearth!  :P

No I quite agree there has been no sign in the infrastructure to support this new chip series so far so that would support the theory that it will be later on  in the year at least before any release is due.

Oh well, probably be looking at a new system next Christmas then.  :(

AMD is being awfully secretive with their release date of Bulldozer chips. I think this piece of info you linked absic has been out there for a while. The problem is, as you've mentioned - what the heck's going on with the desktop version which, so far, is supposed to be released in Q1 ???.

On the other hand, I wonder how Intel and AMD will fare in a few years if the current trend continues. I mean, there's nothing out there that requires more than what medium-level quads from the Core 2 Quad and Phenom II x4 lines can offer. At least for about 90% of users out there. Better yet, most people would be perfectly satisfied with reasonably clocked dual cores.

Basically, hardware is progressing substantially faster than software at the moment. As it is, Thubans and i5s, i7s are already an overkill and should cover everything for the next 2-3 years without problems.

Myself, I'll likely skip Bulldozer/Sandy Bridge generation altogether. As I doubt I'll have any use for that much processing power.

Ah but we will be able to have 100 core chips to rave about even if there is nothing to make use of them! No these things go in cycles and sometimes it's the software mleading the hardware and others it's like the situation now where the hardware is leading but no doubt things will swing again as another killer application comes out to the fore.

I am in kinda the same boat.  I will most likely get a X6 sometime in the future then a Bulldozer in about 2-3 years.  At the same time, for everything I do there is no reason for me to get a better computer, it is all just for fun.

Bulldozer will be out in March I think, can't wait to have a play with that platform.
