890FXA-UD5 and a CPU running at only 1/4 speed

Is it possible that a cpu that only runs at 1/4 speed as default is defective?  I know that the mobo will limit the cpu to what it thinks is a safe speed. But 800myz is very low.  I hope this is the problem as I intend to purchase  a 3.3ghz AMD x6 cpu next week.  I have already updated to F6 for the Bios.



Note: Even after changing the multiplier to 16.0 and boosting the other rate to 207, it shows in Windows Properties sheet as being above 3.3ghz.  However, in CPU-Z it shows at around 800+ mhz.

You have selected to turn on Cool And Quiet in the BIOS (or it is on by default). This is a feature that allows the operating system to turn down the clock of your CPU when it is not fully needed. As required the CPU will clock up to its full rated speed (and in some cases actually further than that).

This is a normal operating case - you have nothing to worry about.

I show the same speed with cool and quiet on or off as well as the other setting which I can't remember the name which has to do with this.  And when the system first posted, it showed 800mhz instead of 3.2 or 3.4ghz.

When system first posts, Cool'n'Quiet driver dynamically adjust the CPU clock lower because the default setting is AUTO. You can set this to DISABLED.
AMD C1E Support - Default: Disabled - When enabled, the CPU core frequency and voltage will be reduced when you aren't doing something CPU intensive.
Installing Easy Energy Saver Utility will also allow CPU Throttling.
Disablie the AMD K8 Cool&Quiet control and AMD C1E Support in BIOS. Save settings and exit BIOS.

You can also set a Power scheme in Windows. You can turn off power saving settings.

As I wrote in the post above yours, even with cool and quiet disabled as well as AMD C1E Support disabled, I still only see 800mhz unless I change the rate to 16 or 17.  Also, the Windows Experience index never goes above 3.7 for the cpu even if I change the rate to 17.0 and it shows 3.42ghz.  And yes, this is the cpu.

Windows index is, at best, worthless. About your problem, disable Core Performance Boost, AMD C1E Support and AMD K8 Cool&Quiet control. If your CPU will still be at some odd frequency then something's wrong with, probably, the board.

I wonder if the problem could be that my CPU is the 140wat version of the 965 Deneb CPU? Everyone else that I have asked about this problem that has the x4 Deneb cpu have the 125Watt version.  Does this mobo support the 140wat cpu?

Ok, there is a problem with the voltage in my cpu.



On the left side is a cpu that is running correctly.  On the other is my cpu and my Windows Experience and CPU supposed speed + the CPU-Z index run on it.

I will attempt to adjust the voltage manually, but it may burn the system.  I hope not.

No good.  Changing the voltage to 1.35 resulted in a BSOD.  Just to make sure, I went back into the BIOS and with Cool and Smart and C1e turned off, and set the multiplier to auto, I was back at 800mhz.  This is so strange.

Doesn't anybody that works for Gigabyte post here?  Especially with knowledge of this motherboard?

Not really, it is usually left to other user's to try and help sort out these problems.

I am running this motherboard (rev 2.1) and the first thing I would suggest you do is load Optimised Defaults in BIOS so that you can start again with a clean slate. Also disable/remove any of the add-on programmes from Gigabyte such as Easytune and DES if you have installed these.

If you could post back with your other system hardware it would help as it might throw up something that you haven't considered.

The Phenom ii X4 965 C2 140 Watt CPU that you have is supported on this motherboard.

Just a heads up.  I heard from Gigabyte Tech Support and they asked me to press F9 inside the BIOS Setup page as this would show me the true speed of what my CPU was running.  Well, guess what? It really is running at 800mhz.  So, it looks like my hunch about it being the CPU was correct.  I will be replacing it hopefully in the next week.  Thanks for all of your help.

You don't mention your Power Plan (scheme) in Windows. If you don't have it set at maximum or full power, that could be the problem. Windows 7 has a high-performance setting in addition to balanced and power saver. In Windows 7 - 64-bit, set it to high performance. Under Hardware in the Control Panel is where the setting is found.

Looks like my original assesment was correct.  whew.  Now to get me a brand new x6 cpu.

Got her fixed.  Just inserted a 1090T CPU, and all is well.
