GA-X58A-UD7 problem with hotswap
« on: December 20, 2010, 11:29:57 am »
Hi guys

I currently have this motherboard installed with the original bios and all settings in the bios changed to ahci. Every time i put the one of my drives in my machine via the hot swap drive bay i get this error message New drive detected, If this device is a port multiplier, only port 0 of the port multiplier will be active. Not sure what that means.
Also when i leave the 4 hot swaps in the computer when the computer boots it fails to start could this just be a simple boot priority problem?

I'm keen to resolve the problem as i need to use different drives on a daily basis.

Hi

What revision is your motherboard and what BIOS version are you running presently?

Also do you have your optical drive on an AHCI configured port because that is asking for trouble too.?

I'm assuming its rev 1 dont know where to check for that and the bios version is FA

Well my optical drive is connected to one of the sata ports and seeing as i enabled ahci on all sata ports then yes it is. Is there a specific port i should just put the optical drive into?

The revision number of the board is printed in white up the left hand side of the motherboard near the PCI slots at the bottom.

Your optical drive can go on any port but I would suggest you steer clear of the AHCI enabled ones.

Ok well the motherboard is at my clients so i should be heading down there soon and i'll double check everything. If there are still problems then i will get back to you.
Thanks

What if you don't have the option? On my board I have AHCI enabled because of my ssd so the optical drive is also connected to AHCI.

Do you not have any other ports apart from the ones your SSD is on?

Well there are six sata ports. Or do you mean on different controllers?

Well I meant ports that are not AHCI enabled. But it amounts to the same thing.

If I set to AHCI all the ports are set to AHCI and I need AHCI for the ssds.

Actually only the ports on the one controller are set to AHCI when selected.

In reality you don't need to have AHCI enabled for running a SSD. It will work fine on IDE mode and even transfer the TRIM commands. Granted it is a touch slower but not much.

On my MA770-UD3 I can but on my M720-US3 there is only one controller.

Oh I see I was under the impression that we were still talking about the GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard as per the thread topic. This is the problem with hi-jacking someone elses thread. OK I understand now.

Well I guess as long as you don't connect the optical drive to the two purple connectors SATA3_4 and SATA3_5 which will only accept RAID drives you will have to go ahead as there is no other choice.
