GeForce GTX 480 Fails to run Need help with a new install
« on: December 28, 2010, 11:21:20 pm »
I just built a new system and installed the video card. I have tried several drivers with the same results. The card works perfectly in Safe Mode. When Windows boots there are several evenly spaced squares ( usually pink) and the screen freezes. After a few minutes and several screen flashes I get the following pop-up: Display driver NVIDIA Windows kernel mode driver version 258.96 stopped responding and has successfully recovered. It doesn't really recover though and I have to push the restart button and run in Safe Mode. I have reinstalled Windows several times and also the drivers. I've read on other forums about changing several BIOS settings. Before I try all that is mentioned, Have any of you figured this out?
 Any ideas?

Try installing the latest driver for the card, could just be those drivers aren't playing nice. Also try re-seatting your card.

Also run Driver sweeper

http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(Setup)-download-1655.html

uninstall your nvidia drivers through either device manager or control panel, reboot into safe mode and run driversweeper to remove any nvidia display drivers. Find the nvidia folder in your c: drive delete the nvidia folder. Then boot and install the new driver and see if that resolves your issue.

Tried that but still have the same issue. From what I've read on other sites, it's an issue between the MoBo and GPU.

can you try the card on another rig? I would say RMA time, have you looked on the evga forums to see if anyone else has the same issues or similar with your particular card?

In the bios set the PCI express freq to 100

Sorry, I don't have another machine to work with. I did set the Freq to 100, no luck either. I updated the MoBo BIOS. Still nothing.

Yeh strange, your PSU seems good enough so I'm thinking it could be an issue with the vram on the card.....Can you take the card to your local computer shop and see if they will test it for you or rip around to a good mate who might have a decent setup for you to just test the card and see if you can reproduce the issue...If so then RMA the card. :)
