GA-EP45-DS3R Memory Ram Problem
« on: March 02, 2011, 02:17:16 am »
Regards,

4 months ago to buy this motherboard http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2842 # ov, all went well until, install my RAM Corsair XMS DDR2 800 (2gbx2gb) 1.8 v worked perfectly, now I'm making a memory upgrade for a Corsair Dominator GT 1066 (2gbx2gb) 1.65v, now the problem is that I place the RAM in the yellow slots (where previously they were working the xms) and not start or Simply upload the bios logo and restarts, then change the ram position to the red slots and worked well without problems, but my question is why not work in the yellow slots? If those slots earlier in the xms worked perfectly.

My version of Bios is f10.

Thank you for your help

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I would suggest clearing the CMOS first.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least ten minutes before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Now you can also make any changes to the memory settings that you want to do.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

You can run the memory modules in either the Yellow or the Red slots for Dual Channel mode. It is jus accepted that the DDR2_1 and DDR2_3 ar ethe best ones as they are the primary channel.

So, i put the memories in one slot yellow and one slot red, the yellow is ddr2_1 and the red is ddr2_2 ? and so has to work perfectlly?

No. Maybe i didn't explain clearly enough. You must put the modules in EITHER the Yellow or the Red slots for Dual Channel mode.

You are doing fine at learning English.

It could be that the slots or memory controller is faulty but that is more unlikely. It could be that there are some bent pins in the CPU socket. If you want to check follow these instructions.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Very carefully remove the heatsink and fan. Probably a slight twisting motion is best to release the two as the thermal paste can act like a glue.

Once off remove the CPU taking extreme care both physically and electrically(static) and place somewhere safe.

Make sure that the lighting is very good and even.

Now scrutinise the socket for any pins that are out of alignment, even slightly.
If in any doubt whatsoever take a couple of macro (close up) photos of the socket and post them on here for us to check.

Also look at the bottom of the CPU at the lands (little copper circles) and make sure that there is a mark in each somewhere near the centre.
If there are any missing marks or any of the pins are obviously bent then that is your problem.

Before refitting the CPU clean off all residue of the old thermal paste and the same on the heatsink and then apply a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice) to the centre of the CPU once it is inserted in the socket.

Well it will be interesting to see the photos. Make sure they are very clear though as the pins are tiny.

check with a magnifying glass socket and it seems that all pins are properly in place, I could not take the picture because it did not work out, I need a camera that supports macro shots that are good, then if not the socket that may be ?

In that case assuming you are correct about there not being any bent pins, I would say the most likely cause would be the memory controller on the motherboard. In which case you will need to contact your retailer and arrange for a RMA of the motherboard. :-\
