890gpaud3h/hd6850 display problems
« on: January 05, 2011, 09:17:33 pm »
Hello, I hope someone can help with this issue as I am going NUTS trying to figure it out. My system has been up and running fine for about 4 months, then all of a sudden certain games that were already installed began having display issues. SERIOUS display issues. Not all games just some(spiderman, rouge warrior to name a few). Now I just installed serious samhd and its the same thing. The graphics are all broken up in layers and reminds me off large pieces of broken glass. Sometimes it is just the sky or moving objects, but I can not see thru it. I thought this may have happened after a driver or bios update so I have tried rolling everything back but still no good. Like I said some games are fine( great even) like black ops, metro, bioshock.... I do not understand

Hi

I think you will find this is a symptom of damaged graphics memory.

Thanks for the response, but if this is the case, how can they work on other games. The problem does not come and go. They either work always on the same games or never on the ones that do not work. Any other responses would be helpful.......

Hi there,

silly question but when you installed the HD6850 did you disable the On-board Graphics Chip?

OK

Does the problem occur when you are running your system at default settings? (CPU not O/C'd)

If you remove the 6850 and try using the On-board Graphics do you have the same problem?

Sorry for all the question but I'm trying to get an understanding of where the problem lies as it could be anywhere. When faced with similar problems I have found that a clean install of the OS and installing latest drivers can sometimes help. Is this an option that you could use?

as a last resort this would be an option. Like I said it is not all games that are affected. Starting to really piss me off that I can play the same games on my crappy $300 desktop and not my custum $1600 rig. By the way as stated in my specs its a crossfire set up. Thanks

Hi,
I can understand your frustration. But where to start in an effort to solve is is the big question here.

You have stated that everything worked fine initially and has deteriorated over a period of time. This would lead me to believe that it is a software issue rather than one of the hardware. Of course, it could still be a hardware issue but trying to find the solution and the cause of the problem might not be easy.

I know it defeats the object but do you get the same problem if you remove one of the Graphics Cards? Reason for asking is to try an establish if the problem is purely crossfire based.
Are your GPU's O/C'd? This can sometimes cause problems, even if they are factory clocked cards and pulling the speed down a little might resolve the issue.

Yes I agree. The only way that the problem is going to be brought to light is by breaking down the structure into smaller parts metaphorically. If you can simplify the systems it will be easier to faultfind.
