Cannot set up RAID on GA-P67A-UD3

Cannot set up RAID on GA-P67A-UD3
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:23:53 am »
My system has 2 SSD in Raid0 and 4 HDD in Raid5. So I put them on ports 0+1 which are SATA III (white) and then the other 4 on the other ports (blue). I start the computer, I get into Bios and configure the controller to raid mode. After restarting, it recognizes all 6 disks, I get in the controller menu (ctrl + I) and see the settings.

When I do this on upgrades as I go from Intel ICH-R on Intel ICH-R, there is no need to touch anything else in order to work properly.

Yesterday, however, I could not see the raid0. While it had validate and read at the post all disks, in the menu, I could see only the RAID5 and 5 of the 6 drives installed, missing the one on port 0. I did a reset and wait again .... Now it shows RAID0 while posting, but it is FAILED! I enter the menu and the same situation here. RAID0 is failed, RAID5 seemed ok and the was drive to port 0.

0+1 are SSD, and thought unlikely to be harmed, however, I checked the cables and replaced them  both. Boot again the same, but now I see the disk on port 0. Well, the data on RAID0 are deleted, but the disc is ok. I go to the menu, erase the 0 and create it again from scratch. It seems OK and I restart. Oh no ... After the restart still the same. The 0 shows failed and when I enter the menu the disc on port 0 is disappeared again!!!

I think myself, calm down and try something else ... I moved the SSDs from ports 0+1 and put then on 4+5. So HDDs from 4+5, are now to 0+1. I boot again and while 5 seems ok, 0 is again failed. Reasonable, so I get in the menu, erase and create it again from scratch. This seems to be going well after booting, so I started installing Win.7.x64 Ultimate from usb stick since, as you know, no IDE port ... and no free SATA port....

Win seems to start correctly, but when it comes to choosing a partition to install, it only sees the raid5!!! RAID0 is vanished! Of course, it is asking me to put the CD with the drivers of the controller to setup it ... What to setup, the other half of the controller??? So I put a usb stick with the drivers, although the manual says that Vista/7 do not need it, and selected the controller. Loads the driver properly, but still does not recognize any device capable of doing boot and set up the operating system!

After changing all the cables, both SATA and power, with no better results, I closed it and tried to figure out what happens ...

With SSDs on ports  0+1 and RAID0, I have problems, while with HDDs on ports 0+1+2+3 and RAID5 sees to work fine. However with SSDs on ports 4+5 I can not setup Windows (ICH-R menu displays RAID0 as bootable). After some thinking I tried another boot up and I freaked out!!! I stared hearing this infamous noise of "clack-clack-clak" form the HDDs! While trying to understand what is happening and from which drive comes the sound, the board has posted and RAID5 is  marked as DEGRADED! I pressed ctrl+I, menu displays and disk in port 0 is missing!!!

Well, after all that I thought that port 0 (SATA3_0) has a problem. So I took the mother back to the shop I bought it 2 days ago in order to check the problem.

After2 hours they called me on the phone and told me that the board is ok, they setup a RAID0 on ports 0+1 and Win7 were installed successfully....

What am I doing wrong???!!!! Is there a bug in BIOS/Chipset and cannot handle 6 disks in RAID configuration?
My BIOS is F3, so today I am planing on updating with F6A, but is this the problem?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

It would seem that you are having a lot of problems there. I can't see anything obviously wrong in what you have done so probably the best thing is to update the BIOS first. If this is the first time then you will need to download the latest version of @BIOS from the website as well as the BIOS update as the supplied one was faulty.

Once done, I would suggest removing the RAID5 and trying just the two SSDs in RAID0 formation. You have too many variables there at the moment and you need to make things a bit more simple to start with. If it works with them then you can look at adding the RAID5 array.

Thanx for the fast response Mantis  :)
This is what I am going to do next. However, I cannot use @BIOS since I cannot boot in Windows. Normally I could update with F12, correct?

Oh yes I forgot that! The only problem you might have is that the updates wouldn't originally work with QFlash the BIOS utility that we would normally recommend for updates and it was advised to use @BIOS for the first one. All I can say is try it and see. If it works then fine, if not we will have to explore other avenues.

Ok... I updated the BIOS and now I have F6A.
Started Windows.7 setup with only the 2 SSDs on ports 0-1, in RAID0 format.
While on partition screen, it displays the unpartitioned space on the RAID, however if I try to select it and continue, I am getting this message:
Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The computer's hardware may not supporting booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.  ???

Have you checked the BIOS settings for the Intel controller and made sure it is set to RAID ?

Actually while we are on the subject you do realise that TRIM wont be supported under RAID and so your drives will degrade much quicker than normal ? You will have to keep breaking the RAID and doing a secure erase manually.

Have you checked the BIOS settings for the Intel controller and made sure it is set to RAID ?
There are two modes in setting up the RAID. First, if you enable XHD, then the mode is RAID only, and if you leave XHD to disabled, you can select from PCH SATA Controller Mode IDE/ACHI/RAID.

I have tried both, with almost the same behaviour. Sometimes, when XHD was disabled and Controller Mode to RAID, even though while posting it was displaying that all drives were controlled by RAID BIOS, the Ctrl+I message did not appear, and I could NOT get into menu to change settings.

Actually while we are on the subject you do realise that TRIM wont be supported under RAID and so your drives will degrade much quicker than normal ? You will have to keep breaking the RAID and doing a secure erase manually.
Yes I do know that, since I had the same setup on a GA-X58A-UD5 before this one  :)

Finaly I came to a conclusion... THIS BOARD, and I mean THIS MODEL, DOES NOT SUPPORT RAID functions on ports 0-1!  >:(

I did everything possible to achieve a good result, I even exchange the board with another one from the shop, but whatever I did, the board could not set RAID0 on ports 0-1. I am attaching some screenshots for all of you to see what happens.
Please note that I putted back my GA-EX-58 and everything works smooth, so there is no problem with the rest of my setup.

Fisrt of all, I am setting the XHD to DISALBED and Controller Mode to RAID

As you can see, it says that all 6 disks are controlled by RAID BIOS... yeah, right...

A few seconds later, it starting to getting clear that I won't be able to use disks on ports 0-1...

And obviously, inside RAID menu, there are no disks available to create RAID0...

Next step is to try with XHD to ENABLED. No options for Controller Mode here...

Nothing changes while searching for drives...

However, inside RAID menu, there is a disk in port 1, but port 0 is still invisible...

So, I tried to create a RAID0 to see what will happen. The message I was getting is that there are not enough drives to create a RAID, so I press enter key, and return back to selection, where as you can see, disk 1 disappeared!!!

After 4 hours of trying to get it work, and while everything works fine with my old mobo, I guarantee you that this board DOES NOT SUPPORT RAID on ports 0-1!!!  >:(

Οκ, Ι need to rephrase this:
THIS BOARD, and I mean THIS MODEL, DOES NOT SUPPORT RAID functions on ports 0-1 with two Intel X25M SSDs!!!

I just tried with two WD Raptors, and seems to work fine. I installed the two SSDs again, and having problems!

Ok, what do we do now? Waiting for a BIOS update? Exchange mobo with another? How can I be sure that another model (UD4, UD5, etc) will function properly?

It might be worth checking for a firmware update for the drives (SSDs) first. Then make sure that you are using the latest BIOS version of the motherboard.

After that try taking out a query with GGTS and see if they can suggest something.

Just enter your email address and click on the language of choice.

Hi Wizard!,

I got same problem as you. 2 Intel X25-M SSD, add them on the SATA port 0,1 of P67A-UD3P. Can't see the Ctrl-I info after seeing the 2 SSDs during booting.

However, I tried 2 HDD on the same ports, I can get in the raid configure window.

or, add the SSDs on SATA 2, 3, I can get in the window too.  ???

Have you got any progress now?

As DarkMantis wrote above, you have to update the firmware on those SSDs and it will play. The latest came out around the end of January, I think on 26.

However, as you probably know, the P67 chipset has a design flaw and it will be replaced with B3 stepping, so you might want to contact your retailer and get a new mobo.

Glad that cured it for you Wizard!. I thought it might just be that.

santasatan, hopefully as Wizard! has said the firmware update will sort out your issues too.
