Installed ATI 5770 on a GA-M57SLI-S4 motherboard and now won't start

Hi all,

Something worrying happened to my PC when I tried to install my new graphics card - XFX ATI 5770. Like this gentleman I heard the computer making a beeping noise, but not only that but no signal went through to my monitor and then it eventually reset itself.

I then unplugged the graphics card, put my old one back in (Nvidia 8700 GT) and that now also won't send any signal to my monitor. I can also hear the PC continue to reset itself every 15 seconds or so. Have I damaged my motherboard? (which is a GA-M57SLI-S4).

Any help would be great - really worried.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

What PSU are you using to power your system?

How old is it?

Does your new GPU require extra power plugs to work?

I am using a Coolmaster RS-460-PCAP-A3 which is a 460w. Apparently the card requires at least a 450w PSU so this should be okay. I also attached a 6-pin power cable into the GPU as it requires. It's about 2 years old now.

So basically the PSU is probably at about 420W or so output now then. Gigabyte recommend 500W for the motherboard.

I would suggest trying to borrow another slightly more powerful PSU and try it, even for elimination purposes.

It's almost certainly the BIOS not up to date enough to run a PCI-E 2.1 card (even though some HD5770s claim to be PCI-E 2.0 I think they are all really 2.1).  The thread you linked to in your first post does say there is a beta BIOS update (not posted on the Gigabyte website) available that sorts the problem and one of the moderators seems to be offering to send it if you PM them (like I have).

I posted http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,4283.0.html with basically the same query although I hadn't bought the card yet!

Of course there is a distinct possibility you also slightly fried your PSU with the more greedy 5770!

Hi,
If your motherboard is the Rev 2.0 you may need to update the BIOS. If you PM me with your e-mail address I can forward it to you. You might like to check out this thread for further information. http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2116.0.html

Hi!

So at the end of a horibble day I'm now here...

The story?! Very simple: I bought a new Sapphire 6850 Vapor-X and you never, never can imagine how happy I was.
Come back home at install the card in my GA-M57SLI-S4 rev.2...and guess what happend? Nothing works...
And you never, never can imagine how frustrated and disappointed I was...and angry.

After a whole day trying all kind of things and my last hope the secret beta BIOS.

Would you please be so kind and send me this BIOS?

THX!

Many thanks!

It was a short night. Many trys with many things. Bios up/downgrades, PCIe overunclocking, voltage changes...

The last stand was: bios version fg, 103 Mhz PCIe clock, 0,025 Volt more PCIe voltage, PCIe voltage onboard plugged in and after many boots it works!
Or better: I hear the HDD starting and working but can't see anything so I plugged in the HDMI TV and see windows starting there.
I control the desktop with a remote laptop and install all catalyst driver (nvida was there before).

I've made my changes back to find the error but nothing changes with my old normal settings.

One hour ago I try your bios but nothing special happend.

The big problems are:

At the start there is no chance to see the desktop on the monitor. Only on TV.
When Windows 7 starts I see the desktop on the monitor, too.

But no chance to change the resolution...it is standard 640x480.
The catalyst driver find the right monitor driver.

My last idea is to setup a new and clean windows 7...

Thanks!

...after I did this I've installed the catalyst driver...the same problem with a fresh installation...

After changing the RAM, the power supply and monitor cable I've changed the monitor self...

A wonder happend: the 19" NEC Multisync 1960 NXi was detected and shows the bios at the startup!!

The other 19" Medion MD 32119 PR is my normal monitor.
There are no drivers for Windows 7 but I think they're not necessary (<- can't remember this word  ;D).

The catalyst driver recognized both monitor correct but the medion seems not to send the correct possible resolutions.

So I start with the NEC and then connect the medion. This works until the next start!

I try to find out why the medion didn't send the right resolution...

Are you using VGA or DVI cables? Both of your monitors are 5 or more years old. My old NEC will not work with DVI, VGA only.

Does the onboard GPU work? It's VGA.............

The Sapphire HD Radeon 6850 Vapor-X is running now.
The cables are only DVI.
The NEC is running fine the Medion is plugged off.

I've tried to make a own monitor.inf for the Medion but this won't work for me...maybe I have to read the manual again...

Good to hear you have the NEC running. The Medion may not support the frequency output of either video card.
