GA-880GMA-UD2H : Eratic USB problems
« on: February 03, 2011, 05:56:51 pm »
Hi,

I built an HTPC using a GA-880GMA-UD2H motherboard in an Antec Remote Fusion Case (that includes an LCD and an USB IR receiver + 2 USB ports on the front panel).

So, the problem I have is that after a while (can be a day or only a few hours), the remote commands stop working correctly (some commands works, some others simply don't and some are doing something completely different than what they are supposed to do).

First, I suspected drivers issue with the case/IR receiver but then I realized that when the problem occurs, if I plug a mouse and a keyboard in either the front usb ports or the MB USB ports in the back, the mouse middle wheel doesn't work and the keyboard sends completely different characters to the PC (if I open notepad and type something, I see all kinds of characters).
The problem always occurs on both the IR receiver and the keyboard/mouse even when they are using different USB controllers!

When I reboot, everything goes back to normal for a while.

Some details about my setup:
I installed all the latest drivers from the Gigabyte web site.
I installed the latest ATI Catalyst driver and software.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits
No PCI cards on the MB
No other USB devices than the Antec ones +  Dell Keyboard and mouse
AMD Phenom II X4 910e 65W
The Antec Case has a 350W PS
8 GB RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaw)
BIOS is version F5
I rarely shutdown the PC as this is an HTPC and it goes into Sleep-Mode most of the time..
The only thing I run on this machine is Windows Media Center
I stream video from a HDHomeRun network device.

Any advice/help would really be appreciated.

Hi

Is the receiver in the sun or other bright light source ?

If no I would say it is most likely to be corrupted software.

Hi,

No the receiver is not exposed to light sources. For example, yesterday the problem occured around 11 PM, the room mas completely in the dark.
Plus, I don't see how corrupted software can affect a mouse and a keyboard using a different USB controller!

I forgot to say im my original post that I also updated the imon software to the latest version (IR remote software/driver)

Currently, the only plausible explanations I can think-of are: Faulty hardware(MB), Faulty USB drivers or some electrical issue.

Any other idea?
Thanks

That was exactly what I was getting at if the IR drivers were duff (technical term) ;)

Well, I guess I'll test with a different IR receiver (I have a Microsoft MCE remote somewhere... just need to find it  :)).
If I don't have the same problem with this receiver, I'll assume you're right and the imon driver was the problem.

So you're saying that a faulty usb driver can badly affect other usb devices?

Thanks
