GA MA790XT UD4P issues?

Hi all

As said in the title I'm having a problem with my motherboard. Seems to only work with ATI(amd) graphics cards. I know that sounds weird but i'll explain.

I have had this board for nearly a year paired with a  PII 965BE (C3 125W), 2x2GB Gskill memory and windows 7 pro x64. The BIOS is latest version(F7).

The first graphics card I used in this rig was a palit GTS 250. It ran ok for a while but then for some reason would not work with the latest drivers. In fact just installing them was a job and trust me I know how to go about uninstalling and installing drivers the proper way. When I did finally install after much hard work they caused the system to randomly freeze, most of the time not even getting past post or into windows. Trying to play latest games was a no go due to having to use older drivers for stability. When the card was pushed it would even BSOD which was caused by the nv drivers failing. In fact even low settings would cause same issue after a while.

Thinking the graphics card was faulty I tried it in another PC. The card works perfectly. Latest drivers installed no problem and no crashes in the applications I had problems with before.

So, I upgraded my PSU for good measure as I thought that might be an issue. I was still getting the same problem.

I bought a new card, a GTX460 SO. I could install the drivers no problem but I was getting random freezes in several games. Lowered settings to point of safe mode and still getting same issue. Tried the card in a different PC and it works perfect.

As a last resort I tried my old 4670 radeon 512MB. It works perfectly, no problems even when pushing it. Ok, it doesn't require nearly as much power as the previous two cards but having tried 2 PSUs I don't think this can be the problem.

So to conclude. Does this sound right that the motherboard has issues with nvidia GPUs only? Has anyone else had the same or a similar problem with this board?

If you think I've left any info out then please don't hesitate to mention. I've had this problem a while now and if it is motherboard I'd like to try and sort it out while it's still under warranty. Thanks for your time.

Best regards,

Ed

Forgot to add, was quite tired at time of writing last night.

Can rule out memory too I think. I've ran memtest countless times and no errors reported. HDD is fine too. There's no shorting anywhere either.

Cheers, Ed

Hi Ed,

Although there shouldn't be an issue with running NVidia Cards on the AMD platform I switched to ATI a few years ago because of the problems I came across when building PC's. Constant BSOD's and crashes that were only resolved with an ATI card and the removal of NVidia drivers led me to believe there was an inherent incompatibility with NVidia Graphics and AMD based systems although I have no hard facts to back this assumption up.

To save me any further grief I switched to ATI cards and touch wood, have not met the same problems since doing so.

Not sure what you can really do about your problem, except raise a question with Gigabyte Technical Support and see if they can offer a reason for your problems or a solution.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Hey absic,

I would agree with your assessment completely. Though like you I have never been able to fully ascertain or prove it as a common problem.

I'll contact Technical Support and see if they can shed any light on the matter.

I appreciate your help.

Cheers,

Ed
