GA-H55M-UD2H (i3, 4gb mem, 550w psu) disk read errors

hi My son spend his hard earned wages on a deal from overclockers.co.uk which included a GA-H55M-UDH mobo, i3 550, 4gb memory (1600! where has all the 133mhz gone .  he replaced his old mobo with 3.2 pentium D and 3gb of 533mhz mem into a working system he has quite a graphics card too ATI 5670hd (i think).

well everything fitted in nicely he plugged it all in and windows 7 would not boot,  or re-install (device has been disconnected during read.. . or similar errors)

I connected up the 80gig ubuntu drive I had and it too complained that that the drive had been disconnected or was no longer available.

ran ubuntu 10.4 fine off the cd and it could see his 500gb hard disk partions okay.

attempted to install xp home over the windows 7 partion and after a reboot it said "disk read error".  we know it is not the disk as two working hds cannot be broken.

tried different sata cables in different slotsthe only thing not tried is a lower power graphics card,  the PSU is quite a good corsair one though,  it is as if the hard disk controller is broken on the motherboard!


1) Is overclockersuk reputable?
2) does this happen to these mobos?


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) All I can say is that there have been several complaints on here recently regarding this company. Whether there was any foundation in them I don't know.

2) Faults can happen to any device but it is not something that we see recurring here.

If you want to try and fix it I am quite willing to offer my help.

thanks for the reply,  the thing about complaints are people only go onto forums when they have problems, so you will get a few people on here saying similar and maybe 1000's at home all happy.

If this is not a common fault or you think I have missed anything then please give us a little help.  I dont want to go down the route of trying things outside of the warranty some of this is including "returning the system to its normal speed etc"  as this is sold as an 3.2 -> 4.0 overclock system, they say it is fully tested but I dont believe this can be true the arctic cooler fan had never been opened and the processor already had the newly smeared paste on it.  I reckon they only test them to bios screen to check the running temps, this is as if it has problems with constant communication with the hard disk, we have tried all the sata ports on the mobo/different cables/different hdd. It did run ubuntu fine from the CD though, so I am not sure about the power supply / graphics card being a problem.

 I bet he is wishing he kept his £220 in his pocket now.

what do you think is worth checking before the call back to the retailer?

If you are using IE try clicking the compatibility tab in the address bar.

As for the testing etc it is quite possible, in fact likely, that the settings would be changed. So if you want to maintain things as they are then you will have to look for another option.

I quite agree with you regarding the fact that only people with problems, in general, come onto forums. However some alleged problems seem to recurr.

so far I have changed the bios to "failsafe settings" which set the drive to ide and I pressed Y to set it back to "eSata" I think.  but the same problem happens.

I will check with overclockers uk tomorrow and see what they suggest and report back before we try anything thanks very much for the offer of assistance it is much appreciated.

If you have already reset the BIOS then you have lost all the settings anyway. That was one of the things I was going to suggest althoiugh you should have used Optimised BIOS Defaults not failsafe.

If you want to carry on now you have started follow the next instructions to the letter.

The next thing to try is to clear the CMOS.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least ten minutes before replacing it.
 
Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.
 
You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self and then press F10 to save and exit.
