GA-X58A-UD3R Power - one or both sockets?`?

Hi,

tried to check for a previous answer, but no joy, so here is my question:

I am currently putting a system together using the above MB (i7 950, 120Gb SSD, 6Gb RAM, GTX285, Corsair 650W PSU etc), and looking to connect up the main power to the board. The MB has 2 "main" power sockets:

2x4 12V Power Connector and
2x12 Main Power Connector

The PSU has both power supplies available.

After reading both the PSU manual & MB manual, I am now confused as to whether I need to connect BOTH power supplies or only ONE. And if only one, then which?

Can anyone advise?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte forum.

You need to install all of the connectors. That is one 24 pin and one 8 pin.

You don't mention what graphics card you are planning to use for this setup but if it is anything top end you will probably need a bigger power supply.

Thanks for the quick response. I reckoned it would be both, but thought it prudent to check before I fried something!

Card is a Gigabyte GTX285. Looking at other forums, the inferrence is the hardware mix should be ok, but will keep an eye.

Most things now assembled, though still waiting for the OS disks to arrive. Approaching that 1st switch on "moment of truth"- wish me luck!

On another matter - I had that horrendous "scraping" sound when installing the CPU, though checking on Google, it seems it is a fairly common "gripe" still a bit paranoid that I've bent pins - it has been a ling time since I built a system, and in the old days the pins were tree trunks compared to today!

Time for that "holding breath moment"...

Well let's hope that no damage was done to the socket pins for the CPU. They are very dlicate compared to the pins of yesteryear.

I think you should be fine with the 285 GPU but if you ever decide to upgrade do bare it in mind.
