GA-870-UD3 Bad CPU Fan Pins?

GA-870-UD3 Bad CPU Fan Pins?
« on: April 18, 2011, 11:33:09 pm »
I have a GA870 UD3 Rev 2.2 Motherboard with Amd X3 450 CPU, 2-2gb crucial ballistix tracer memory.  I successfully installed all components including video card.  I tested each piece of hardware as I installed it.  The last thing I installed was the video card. The bios screen came up, but suddenly went dark.  I looked at the board and the CPU fan had stopped running.  I tried another heatsink and fan and it would not run.  Then I tested both heatsinks and fans on another board and both ran fine.  I tried one of the heatsinks and fans on the board again and had the same problem.  I decided the pins on the fan were not working so I RMA'd the board.  Do you think my assumption was correct? I know all components are compatible with the board because I have the same board running with the same components with the exception of the CPU; however, I verified that the CPU was compatible with the board before buying the CPU.  Thanks for your help.  ???

Did you use the same PSU when you were swapping the cards around ? Because it could be a power problem.

I used the same PSU.  There was no problem until the bios came on the screen. The power supply still runs, but the fan on the cpu does not.

It could be as DM said, possibly the PS..If you have more than one 12 volt rail..The one that feeds the CPU could be faulty or insufficient to power the processer/fan..When you get the MB back at least that variable will be eliminated.. :)

Edit: Even the rail that feeds the Graphics card could do it..

The PSU is a brand new Antec 650 modular.  I suppose it could be bad, but it just does not seem likely.  I guess I will find out when I get the board back.

Looks like a good brand and should work for you..You might recheck your modular connections to the PS..Remove and reinsert them
several times to burnish the connector pins..Just in case you had a high resistance connection...Easy to do thing..
Other then that play it by ear when you get the MB back in..

I had a response from Gigabyte asking me to RMA the board. Hope it does not take too long to get it back.  Thanks to all for your suggestions!
