Memtest86+ errors with 4 sticks of RAM

Memtest86+ errors with 4 sticks of RAM
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:59:54 pm »
Hi,

I have a system with the specs as below:

i7 2600k
GA-H67A-UD3
4X2Gb Corsair DDR3 1333Mhz

and recently I was having some graphics problems (which I think I have separately resolved) which led me to do some memtest86+ testing. All sticks of RAM work fine on their own and three of them pass properly but introducing the 4th causes a conistent failure in the 6th test. Reading around has indicated this may be due to underpowered RAM. I've tried upping the DRAM voltage to 1.56 from the default of 1.5 and the VTT voltage to 1.1 from 1.05 but I still saw failures. I don't really know what I'm doing with these settings and beyond increasing each of the above settings incremementally and running an overnight memtest I was wondering whether someone could give me some pointers on what settings to use?

Thanks

Memtest86+ is supposed to be run  on one stick of memory at a time and if your modules are all passing the test properly (at least 10 cycles) then there is nothing to worry about.

is that the case? if you do a search on google for memtest86+ errors with 4 sticks of RAM there are many pages where upping the RAM voltage is recommended. Its not listed as a known problem with memtest86+?

thanks

Yes I expect if you have a problem with running the memory with all slots filled then increasing the memory voltage (amoungst other things) can help but you were complaining of using Memtest86+ not that you had a stability problem in normal use.

i don't know if i do. the pc is used as a HTPC and i was seeing horizontal lines in the HD video at scene changes plus bits where it seemed to be in slow motion. Additionally my RAM usage seemed to be exceptionally high, often at around 95% for a HTPC which although is running a lot of processes and services, using all 8Gb seemed unecessary to me. Reading on this pointed me to posible RAM problems and as I didn't have chance to memtest this PC before putting it into service i thought i'd run the tests. which it then failed.

i think i've separately resolved the video issues and my "available" RAM seems more reasonable following my increase in the DRAM voltage (no idea if this is connected) but its still failing memtest. if its possible i'd like to resolve it, but if you are telling me its not a concern then i'm happy with that too

To be certain whether you have a problem with your memory is to run Memtest86+ on each stick seperately. If it passes then you shouldn't have a problem.
