p67a-ud7-b3 Memory Woes
« on: April 30, 2011, 07:29:41 am »
Hi- Just received my new mobo after rma'ing.  Well, I afraid I may have another lemon.  I'm trying to use 12gb of corsair ddr3 Vengeance.  For some reason if I populate slots 1 & 2 in any combination it causes my pc to cycle on and off.  I've tested the ram modules and they seem fine (in dimm slots 3 & 4).  my bios are the default settings.  I have manually set the timings to 9-9-9-24, and bumped the volts up from the mem recommend of 1.5v all the way to 1.7 but still get the on/off cycle.  Am I doing something wrong?  I would think it was a bios issue IF I could get the 8gb to recognize in slots 1 & 2.  Any ideas?  Hope its not defective rimm slots :(; thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I have the same board for testing purposes and have previously heard of issues  regarding the filling of all slots. I cannot check this out as I only have two modules of available memory for the board. It does seem funny however that it should only be slots 1 & 2 that seem to be affected.

Have you manually input all the timings as well as the voltage for the RAM ?

Hi -Thank you for the reply.  I did set the timings to 9-9-9-24, and gradually bumped the voltage up from auto-->1.5(listed on rimm)-->1.6-->1.7.  Come to think of it, I did get rimm slots 1&2 to boot once but I cannot remember if it was at the increased voltage(s).  I do know that when I go back to a single (slot 3) or a double (slot 3&4) the pc will still cycle on/off a single time before it then posts normally.  Do I need to manually set something other than just timings and voltage?  Everything else in bios is default (auto).

If you could list all your other settings like QPI/Vtt, Uncore multiplier, memory multipier, etc it would help.

I'll get those settings listed later today (gotta get my camera back).  Btw, my original post was somewhat inaccurate as I've got 16gb, not 12.  Also, pretty sure all the memory related settings are at default (auto).  I will still send pics.

Remember, I have tried the timing and voltage (even though they are shown as default in the above pics).

Update - getting a green and yellow light from mobo.  Yellow indicating overvoltage or heavy loading when rimm slots 1&2 are used?

You are making things nearly impossible to faultfind as you are changing the spec as we go. Maybe you could list all your system components here in detail before we go any further.

Certainly not trying to confuse or increase the difficulty of troubleshooting.

mobo: p67a-ud7-b3 (bios F3)
CPU: intel 2600K (default clocks)
PS: 1250W
Memory: 4x4gb Vengeance
gpu: 580gtx sli
Heatsink:  Corsair H70

After I tried to adjust the timings and the voltage, I have the bios set back to default settings (as per pics).  All memory modules have been
tested in single configuration to ensure the are not defective.  I did notice the mobo, memory led indicator displaying a green and a yellow
light while the cycling on/off was occuring.  Consulting my mobo guide, it defines the yellow led as either overvoltage (strange, cause all settings
are default), and/or heavy loading.  Sorry for the confusion and your help and patience are appreciated.

Thanks, I wasn't being funny with you just stating a fact.

Don't take any notice of LEDs coming on when your system is POSTing as they should all light up and then go out as POST progresses. It is part of the testing procedure.

If any stay on afterwards then it means there is a possible problem. Your yellow LED if it stays on would be quite legitimate as you are loading the memory controller heavilly by having all the slots filled. This is the reason for increasing the voltage to compensate.

I would recommend applying these changes to the BIOS.

DRAM voltage 1.6v

QPI/Vtt voltage 1.2v

Performance Enhance  to Extreme

DRAM Timing Selectable to Quick

Timings set to 9-9-9-24

Uncore multiplier set to 24-26 if your memory multiplier is still set to 12. (or twice the mem multi - twice the mem multi plus 2)

XMP set to Disabled

I think that just about covers it.

Thank you sir; Guess if this does not work I'll have to succumb to the notion that I have defective rimm slots 1&2 and rma the mobo.  Sorta sucks considering this will be the second mobo in two-weeks I've had to return.  The first had a defective sli controller and ubs 3.0 ports :(

Well these things do happen occasionally. It is just unfortunate thatyou had two on the trot maybe. Still try those settings and possibly it will work ok. Just keep us informed of your progress please. ;)

What is the uncore multiplier?

update - Well, unless the uncore multiplier will make a difference, it still cycles on/off with all the other suggested settings.
