Gigabyte X58-UD5 dead?

Hi guys,

I've had my computer for the past 2 years with no problems what so ever but this morning my computer didn't power up at all.

I've checked the power supply by bridging the green wire and the ground together. The power supply seems to power on all the case fans and graphic card so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

When I connect the 24 pin back to the motherboard, there seems to be a very feint light on the motherboard.



Can you guys suggest anything else I can check before I RMA?

The specs of my computer is the following:

Motherboard - Gigabyte X58-UD5
CPU - Intel i7 920
RAM - 6GB Corsair XMS3
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 295
PSU - Corsair TX750

Hi Bash* and welcome.

From your description of events this morning it certainly would seem that the motherboard has problems. It is possible that the PSU could still be at fault but it is unlikely. The only way to be certain would be to try another one if that is possible. Otherwise I am afraid it looks like an RMA to the retailer.

It might just be worth unplugging everything that isn't completely necessary to boot in case one of them has gone to ground.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare power supply that I could try.

I was on the phone to Overclockers UK (where i bought my PC from) and they stated it is most likely the motherboard at fault.

They also stated that any RMA would have to be sent to the manufacturer as it has passed the 1 year warranty service they provide.

I removed all the un-needed components and try to boot the motherboard up and it still doesn't turn on at all.

I just sent them an email in regards to my problem.

Could you by any chance know how long the whole procedure takes as I am returning back to university in a weeks time.

Well you might be lucky but normally it takes a little longer than that I think. Usually it is around two weeks roughly.

Sometimes it maybe shorter, even 1 week. It depends on the current loading of our RMA dept.

I connected my power supply to another computer to check if it was a problem with the power supply...ended up booting the computer up.

so..

I connected the power supply back on to my my computer and it powered the computer fine 

Anyone know the reason behind this?

OK not the answer you wanted, I know. There could be a couple of reasons that I can think of: Power supply beginning to fail. Bad connnection between PSU and external power supply and/or motherboard.

I would suggest the same most likely culprit. I have a PSU that has a dodgy connection on the 24 pin connector and one day I plan to sort it but I only use it for my spare so it isn't imperative that I get it done.

I'm planning to see how my computer runs over the weekend and if any other problems start to occur. I will RMA the culprit

If you suspect ther PSU or cables try booting up and then carefully moving the cables that come from the PSU to see if there are any dodgy connections or broken wires etc.
