GA-Z68X-UD7-B3: No fans, MD1 and MD2 leds both on
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:52:11 am »
Hello,

I just assembled a computer with the following components:

  • Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 motherboard
  • Intel Core i7-2600K processor
  • 16 GB (4 X 4 GB) DDR3-1600 Kingston HyperX RAM
  • Scythe Mugen 2 rev B CPU cooler (including fan)
  • Gigabyte GV-N580UD-15I video card, inserted into slot PCIEX16_1
  • OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, 120 GB, connected to SATA3_0
  • Western Digital WDEARS20 2.0 TB harddisk, connected to GSATA3_6
  • Blu-ray burner connected to SATA2_2
  • Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W power supply
  • Fractal Design Define R3 case

All the connectors (power and interfaces) are connected to the power supply, including the 8-pin CPU power, 24-pin motherboard power, 8-pin and 6-pin connector on the graphics card, power to the three SATA devices, fan on the CPU cooler (connected to CPU_FAN), two case fans (connected to SYS_FAN1 and SYS_FAN2). Also F_AUDIO and F_USB1 are connected to chassis front panel.

When I plug in the power and switch on the power supply, one of the ACPI LEDs and the power button on the mother board light up.

But when I press the power button, the system remains dead. None of the fans spin. The Debug LED display remains off. But the MD1 and MD2 LEDs both light up after pressing the power button.

What does this mean and what can I do to solve this problem?  :'(

Looks like CPU problem to me, try resiting it and check the socket pins.
Also try minimum hardware attached with 1 RAM stick. Clear CMOS.

Thanks.

I took out and re-seated the CPU.

But I think it was something else. The 24-pin motherboard power connector consists of two parts, 20 + 4 pins. I think I plugged in the 4-pin part in the wrong orientation. I removed everything from the chassis, and put the motherboard with just one RAM stick on my desk and connected the power and tried to start it. It looks like it works - the debug LEDs start displaying numbers and end with FF (attempt to boot).  :)

Now I'm going to put it all back in the chassis again.

It works!  :D

Here's a picture of the plug. Unfortunately the 4-pin part can easily be plugged in in the wrong orientation...

Glad you didn't burn anything... ;D
