X58A-UD3R - Cannot boot into POST screen - newbuild

Hi everyone,

Just found this excellent site after searching extensively for a solution to my problem.

I'm building a new pc using the X58A-UD3R mobo, an i7-950 pcu and standard Intel fan, a Samsung F3 7200rpm 1TB hdd, 3x2gb Corsair CMP6GX3M3A 1600Mhz memory, LG dvd drive, and a PNY FX380 graphics card. I'll be installiing Win7 64bit (once this problem is solved).
The pc will be used for music production only hence the modest graphics card but more memory.

I assembled the mobo, pcu, graphics card to one of the PCI-e slots, hdd to SATA2-1 (far right uppermost socket), dvd drive to SATA2-2 (lower right hand side socket) and one stick of memory (in slot DDR3-1).

Everything went in well with no problems and I connected my monitor to the graphics card. I then powered on to start the Win7 install but absolutley nothing happened. All the case and pcu fans were turning, I could just about hear the hdd whirring, and the dvd was opening and closing as you'd expect, but there was no output to the monitor and the monitor gave the on-screen message 'no signal - check cable. Everything was checked but still no display of the POST. I then swapped one of the memory sticks and still nothing so got the graphics card out of my current music pc to try that in case I had a faulty graphics card but still no display. I then removed everything, checked the mobo, reassembled the pcu and fan, tried another memory stick, installed the graphics card (I hunted on the net for any reviews and it seems to be a consistently good unit), put in the hdd and dvd drive, turned on the power and still nothing.

The board seems to have everything you need and I was hoping that it'll last me a good few years but the initial signs are not good.

Can anyone suggest what could be going wrong and what the solution could be?

 Hiya Terry .... excellent taste in board and CPU (I have the same combo) and when you get it going , it won't disappoint! .. to get going, What power supply (And Watts)...you said "one of the PCI slots"?  this is the top (Blue) slot right ? Next you may as well hop right in and populate 3 memory slots 1,3 and 5 they'd be the white ones, this will send you into triple channel (I'd go this way with all new components)......Not familiar with this card, does it have a power cable to connect?....Are you using DVI cable ?  check connection.....check cable.... which port from card.....does it Beep on post ?

 This should give you something to play about with..........post your findings when done!

Hi I see Allan has already been giving you some good advice. Make sure that both the 4 pin 12v ATX connections near the CPU are properly inserted as well as the 24 pin. Also double check that there are no shorts from the motherboard to the chassis. The most common is an extra pillar/post that is behind the board.

Many thanks for your quick response.

The graphics card doesn't appear to have a power connector though the fan on it is spinning around so it might be getting some power direct from the slot. I will also try my other graphics card that is passively cooled by a heatsink rather than a fan.
I definitely haven't connected the 4pin 12v ATX connector as I didn't think this was necessary so will try it tonight and let you know how it goes. All of the cables are conected securely and I'm using an Antec server case that has a 750w psu which is far more than I need.

I've got the correct number of pillars on the chasis going into the mobo but I'll check again to make sure nothing is touching where it shouldn't.

Also, I didn't mention in my previous post that the mobo is on Revision 2.

OK. I think that you will find that once you connect up the extra power cables the board will boot fine.

The graphics card is only a low powered card so it probably doesn't need a dedicated power supply lead.

Hi Dark,
I connected the ATX 8pin lead as you and Allan suggested but unfortunately it hasn't solved the problem and I still can't see any output on my monitor.
The steps I took last night were to:
Connect the ATX 8pin power lead to the board.
Use my older passive GPU (Nvidea 9500 series) as this doesn't need any power and I know it works.
Reseat the GPU in another slot.
Plug in a new DVI cable between GPU and monitor.
I've also attached a couple of pictures to show the layout of the board in the case, and the GPU.
What I did notice this time was that I was getting the lights on the mouse and the keyboard which didn't happen before, and that the dvd drive was attempting to load the Win7 install dvd but still nothing on the screen.
If you have any further suggestions I could try I'd be grateful before I contact the seller of the board.

Have you tried installing the GPU into the proper slot PCIEx16_1 rather than PCIEx16_2 ?

 Ditto, and after that if it's still a no-go.............  just for the hell of it disconnect everything, and I mean everything......keyboard, mouse, drives..........if you have just M/Board with Video-card Mem and cpu connected to the monitor....on boot it should get to the post screen.....if not you've just ruled out half your kit......report back your findings to DM ....gotta go out for a few hours.

I had the GPU in that slot when I first powered up the mobo but may have moverd it to slot _2 just before I plugged in the ATX power connector. I'll try again tonight and will also try your suggestion of connecting only the CPU, mem, and GPU to the monitor and see what happens.

Hi Dark and Allan,

I tried both of your suggestions last night (move the GPU to PCI E slot 1 and to remove all components apart from the GPU, CPU, and memory) but unfortunately still no output to my monitor.

Is there anything else I could try before giving up the fight and returning the board to my supplier as I'm keenly aware that I could have made an error somewhere in the assembly? I'll have one last try to completely remove everything from the case tonight and reassemble based on what I've learn't from you. Are these boards pretty robust as I take all the usual precautions (antistatic strap, etc) in assembly and don't like to make any changes unless necessary?

 It could very well be an RMA but if your going to give it one more shot, ... the only two things I can think of now are 1)  have you tried to connect the monitor to another source (PC laptop) and 2) under the CPU (LGA) is there any bent pins ?  you may need a good light and Magnifying glass or loop!

I am having the same issue, with duplicate  builds.  all i can say is WTF .  I wasted hours looking on forms with this problem and non of them got solved.  i work with mac and build online color suites, and data carts for film use.  so i have unlimited supplies of what ever i need, and still no combination that gives me any graphics.  what is wrong,

 Well this is a development, If your having the same issue with multiple builds, I'd be contacting the moderator (Dark Mantus) of this site and discuss with him as to the next move, it sounds like Gigabyte might like to become involved as your have the same issue with multiple builds.....could be a gremlin in the hardware or simply a compatibility issues with some of the kit your using, ....either way I think they might like to get to the bottom of it with you!

OK. It would seem like pilot error to be honest. Have you made sure that the GPU Primary Boot device boot  is set to PCIE_x16 .

Also have you made sure that the BIOS is  is running  Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Is the primary graphics cable  and ordinary one  and not some sort of adapter. DVI or VGA. It won't display anything if there is an adapter present.

What PSU are you using at present ?

Do you get any beeps when trying to boot ?

Try booting withput the keybaord and mouse.

I am sorry if we have already covered some of the questions before.
