GA-X58A-UD3R Rev2 NO POST , NO POWER :(
« on: May 26, 2011, 10:14:00 pm »
Hi i have a  GA-X58A-UD3R Rev2 , building up a new system. Using a Corsair 650W, HD 5770 . I completed building the setup, i don't know if it has anything to do but i accidentally used used a lower voltage cable for the PSU , the cable that came with it is a 13A 125 V ~  , the cable i plugged in was 10A 125 Volts.

I was able to power up the system just fine, still no OS installed, just reading the BIOS ( to which i made no changes ) . Then i saw that one of the LEDS in the front wasn't coming up ( just a minor thing ) , things is i turned the computer down to see why wouldn't that light come up in the chassis , and when i tried to turn it back on i got two LEDs lit on the motherboard, close to the RAM, i believe they are phase LEDs, there is one green and one yellow. No fans or chassis leds, no sound, no post, just the cpu fan turned on for a millisecond then turned off.

Funny thing, when i disconnect the 8-pin power from the mobo and turned it on, all the computer fans and chassis leds where up and running, but no post. So i don't think there is a short in the board

What could be the cause of all this ???

Hi

It is quite possible that you have a short to the chassis maybe from a spare motherboard post or something like that. I would suggest removing the motherboard form the case and test it on the workbench.

Make sure that you observe anti-static precautions.

Lay some cardboard or use the motherboard box that is non-conductive on the worktop and remove the motherboard/CPU/heatsink/fan/buzzer/one stick of memory and PSU from the case and put it on the cardboard. Add the keyboard and now I know you haven't got any graphics but try and boot. The system should try and then fail emitting a series of beeps. Please post what sounds it makes.

Hi Dark Mantis

I tried to do it on bench and it still would do the same, i placed it in the case back again, but now when i try to turn it on it does the same thing and sometimes even smoke comes out of the motherboard near the heatsinks !!!  :o  , i already RMA'd the board , but could it be also the power supply that could be doing this ??? i'm scared that when i get the replacement mobo it would do the same thing  ???    , let me know what you think of this , your help is always greatly appreciated :)

Hi

That sounds a bit drastic....I don't like anything to do with smoke and computers! Always bodes ill. It is a shame that you have already RMAed the board as there is no way we can now test for what was causing the fault and smoke. It sound like something was drawing excess power. Exactly where did the smoke appear to be coming from, as accurately as you can please ?

Hi

Well , it was coming from what it looks like a heatsink, where it says "Ultra Durable" on the mobo, that where the smoke was coming from, any thoughts ????

Thank You so muchh

That area is the power phases for the board. If they were smoking I would have the board RMAed as something serious is wrong.
Contact your retailer for details.

Hi

Okay so i finally RMA'd the board and got the new one today, i setup everything and when i turn it on it goes to a loop, all phase, cpu and ram voltage light up , it turns on for a bout 3 seconds then turns off , and after 2 seconds it turns on again and so on goes the loop. No beeps, and no post ,Not having good luck with this build :(  . Could it be the PSU ? I have 0 idea .....

Thanks
