GA-G41M-Combo Kingmax DDR3 2x 2gig 1333Mhz ram issues
« on: January 18, 2011, 01:14:47 pm »
Iv'e realised that my ram (Kingmax DDR3 1333Mhz 2x 2gig) runs at 1065/1066mhz when i checked on Easy Tune 6 and at the bios. I left the ram frequency on auto and changed the multiplier to x4C and the pc went onto the desktop but all my programmes and games wont work. I tried x4A multiplier and my graphics card wont work. I tried decreasing the frequency to 333/266/200. All these frequencies give me different problems. 333mhz wont have a multiplication of x4A nor x4C, only 3.2B and 2.4B which dont add up to 1333mhz, only 266mhz and 200mhz but its either my pc will freeze, graphics card wont work or programmes wont work. My specs are Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66ghz, Kingston 2x 2gig DDR3 1333Mhz, Palit geforce 9800GT super+ 1gig 256 bit, samsung 160gig HDD + 1tb, samsung dvd writer. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Help

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I would suggest clearing your CMOS and going back to the Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least ten minutes before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self and then press F10 to save and exit.

Im doing that now, but i dont see how that will make my ram run at its designed speed.

Chances are it won't but after all the settings you have been changing in the BIOS we need to have a stable known starting point.

What do i do now? Ive went to the Kingmax website to check what sought of settings i should have for my ram... The timings are 9-9-9-24, on the Kingmax site they are said to be 7-7-7-24. Ive tried changing them but my pc will give me 5 error beeping sounds from bios, pc will reboot itself twice and everything will be at default. Ive tried every setting possible.  Ive even flashed my bios but i dont see any change. The only multiplier that seems to work is x4A but at the cost of malfunction in programmes.

Have you checked on the website that the actual memory modules you have are compatible with your motherboard?

i have basically the same issue.
hardware:

ga-g41m-combo rev 1.4 F3 BIOS
intel core 2 quad Q9400 2.667 GHz (333 MHz FSB)
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ

see screenshots.
RAM is on the approved list for 1333 MHz. RAM SPD indicates 1333 MHz but actual is 1066 MHz
i see that there are two appropriate SYSTEM MEMORY MULTIPLIER choices, 2.4B and 3.2B but 3.2B only gets me to 1066 MHZ

why isn't there a 4.0B SYSTEM MEMORY MULTIPLIER choice? if there were, RAM would be at 1333 MHz

please advise.

thanks,
JSD

i'm going to start a new thread with a title specific to my question - i don't want my question to be confused with the original poster's question.

Don't see a GA-G41m-combo rev. 1.4, only see rev. 1.3 on Gigabyte website?
If it's the rev. 1.3 than 1066 is its default setting only thru overclocking u can get 1333mhz.
Can your board use both ddr2 and ddr3?
Some G41m-combos have 2 dimms for ddr2, and 2 dimms for ddr3.
The G41 chipset should only use 800, 1066,or 1333 thru oc.
Specs show that on Gigabyte site.

set as follows:
preformance enhance  ( turbo )
frec. latch  ( 333 )
spd  (3.20b)

No 3.33b or 4.00b, because 1066 is default for G41 chipset
If you use memory of 1333mhz spd with a xmp profile it will overclock your cpu.

Thanks Brimac,

Yeah I believe it's considered a rev. 1.3 but I saw that "rev. 1.4" is printed on the motherboard itself so I thought that it was perhaps a 1.4.

I wasn't sure what the default memory frequency was for the g41 chipset. I'm actually glad to hear that it's 1066 because all I really want to do is go as fast as possible without stressing the CPU, mobo. or RAM via over-clocking.

Up until now I was lacking a few details re: how to properly OC the CPU freq in order to achieve 1333 on the memory bus - your response pointed me in the right direction; i.e., that I should latch the MCH at 333 with a 3.2B multiplier then jack up the CPU freq...

What I found is that my Q9400 doesn't like to be OC'd very much at all - would not boot above 3 GHz (not high enough to get to 1333 for the RAM) and I don't want to start jacking up voltages. So while the RAM could do 1333, the CPU doesn't like its freq jacked up that much.

So I'm actually very happy to run the CPU at its designed 333 MHz with an 8 multiplier = 2.667 GHz and the memory at its designed 1066 MHz. The machine performs beautifully at these default settings and appears very happy.

Thanks,
John D.

I am also full satified with default parameters for my Ram's in 2* 533 with temperature only some 40 °

->  XMP capable tested and running fine in 2 * 800 / 1600 but memory sticks are very hot > 60 °

Hi

I see that your question has been answered clearly by Brimac already and just wanted to mention that in real world usage you are not going to notice hardly any difference between the two speeds anyway and as Pierre said it only ramps up the tempertures.
