Weird graphics corruption during boot

Weird graphics corruption during boot
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:54:52 pm »
Dear all,

I have recently built a new PC, well upgraded my blackbird, and have been having a weird issue. When booting sometimes (1 in 10 boots) I get a weird graphical corruption with my new HD6950 Gigabyte. I have RMA'd one and they could not find a problem but its back with the new one I ordered (not the same card)! Also I updated the bios on the motherboard (gigabyte P67A-UD4) and the graphics card and had it again.... (I have 2 2GB sticks of Dominator 8-8-8-24 running with their xms profile)

Also sometime my monitor doesn't wake up when I reboot, I have to turn it on and off manually but I think that that is an issue with my dell u2711... That said I have been running the u2711 with my macbook pro for months without issue... (It was the best laptop/PC at the time and I run win7 64 for CAD applications) I have used DVI on both... Its weird... Cant get it to happen by wiggling it either so I don't think its the cables fault... Additionally most people complaining about their u2711 not waking up were using display port not DVI like me....

I used my old 9800gt for a week without any issues while the HD6950 was being RMA'd.... The pain is I've paid £20 for testing of the original card (with no fault found) and return postage £10... Plus postage of the current card £10... So currently i'm down £40.. So if I return this one I'll be down another £10 for the return postage plus £10 postage for whatever I get instead.... So that will be £60 total... ...it's really adding up!

On top of that, if I do return it all I can imaging getting is an evga 570 which will be another £40 more than the 6950 again! Plus it won't have the 2gb vram which will really hurt if I go dual card down the road at my resolution of 2560x1440... That's really why I wanted the 6950...

Really annoyed and disappointed.... Any suggestions?

You should be running Dual link DVI cable  (DVI-D)... not a plain old DVI for the U2711.........did the same thing myself....bugger of a problem for a week.

I think it is dual link, it came with the monitor... at work and have a single link cable in on my dell u2410 in front of me and it looks much thinner... But i cant be sure.... Its been working with the same cable flawlessly on my laptop and it works 99% of the time with the computer.... the picture you see is only sometimes during boot, it goes away when it gets to the windows log-in screen... Thanks a million for the help :)

You need to look at the business end of the plug (Male pin count).....anyway.....just for fault finding , have you tried dropping the screen res down a couple of notches and tried the other port on the monitor?

I'll check it out... The problem only happens during booting so I can't change the resolution to see it it goes away... Also the problem is not consistent.. only one in ten boots or less....
