Quick one about AHCI mode

Quick one about AHCI mode
« on: June 17, 2011, 05:16:38 pm »
I've installed WIndows 7 and the SATA mode in the BIOS is set to IDE. When I try and switch it over to AHCI it bluescreens.

From what I've read this is down to the lack of drivers. So is it possible to install the drivers on a system which already has Windows installed or does it have to be done at the same time as the install?

Hi

the problem isn't actually a lack of drivers but more the way Windows 7 does things. When you install in IDE mode it disables AHCI. There is a registry tweak that you can do that will get you up and running in AHCI you can then install the Intel AHCI drivers, if you wish to, once you have gone through the reboot process a couple of times.

Here's a guide to alter the registry for AHCI mode: http://windows7themes.net/switch-to-ahci-after-install-windows-7.html
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Of course absic is correct but you could just start again as it is a clean instal and just start off with AHCI mode set before you install Windows.

I've performed a smaller registry hack and it all seems to be ok... For now!! :)

Thanks as always
