Confused about Ram Setup

Confused about Ram Setup
« on: July 20, 2011, 04:28:03 am »
Hi Guys

Can you help me to understand.

I have a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD6 Motherboard

This system can have up to 16 gig ram. Each slot can only handle 4 gig max. The white slots can hold dual rank. Blue slots only hold single rank.

Question
Is the dual rank memory stick then 8 gig? Eg: 8+4+4=16
I'm confused as to what to get, but I do want to take advantage of it's full 16 GB capability.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit

Specifications

6 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 2600+/2200/1600/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
Support for non-ECC memory modules
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules

I'm confused as to what to get, but I do want to take advantage of it's full 16 GB capability.

This system contains 6 DIMM sockets, 8 ranks maximum. Dual rank modules may be installed in first bank, then single rank modules must be used in second and third memory banks to address 8 ranks total.
Thanks

Both white and blue slots support Dual channel.
The difference is only Double sided or Single sided memory(but only if you fill all 6 slots).
Do not mix single Ram (1x2/4GB) or double Ram(2x2/4GB).
For 16GB you must have 4 Ram sticks with 4GB on each, two install in white slots (1-4) and another two in blue slots (2-5 or 3-6).
