OK I fixed it. The answer does not make sense, but here is what I did. First, I forced the correct Intel AHCI driver into the existing IDE based WXP installation. On the blue screen reboot, I set up the Intel SATA controller in AHCI mode. I had only one drive connected and it was connected to the Intel controller. Once I ironed that out, I reconnected the BluRay DVD drive. After everything was working I again ran SSD benchmarks, but they told me that it was running SATA 1 instead of SATA 2. So no joy yet. I then moved the BluRay drive to the Jmicron controller. Still no joy. Finally, I connected a SATA 2 hard drive to the Intel controller in addition to the Samsung SSD. I then ran the Intel Rapid Storage utility. It, like Sandra before it, said that both the SSD and the hard drive were in SATA 2. This time when I ran the benchmark, in fact they were. So I don't know if the good result came from running the Intel utility or adding the hard drive, but it now works well and the fast stuff is under AHCI control.
