SSD / HDD / Disk Management

Yesterday i checked something in Disk Management.
Disk 0 - SSD with OS, Disk 1 and Disk 2 - D and E partitions - 2 HDD's
Today, Disk 0 is E, and my SSD as OS partition is Disk 2
Is that normal ?

It is quite a common occurance and I have just checked mine as a matter of interest and see that my SSD (C drive) is now listed as Disk1 and my backup drive as Disk 0. I think it is just the way Windows translates the data.

I thought the controller is maybe gone
By the way : in BIOS i have SATA RAID / AHCI MODE - AHCI enabled
On the same menu page, down, i have Onboard SATA / IDE Ctrl Mode - IDE enabled, not AHCI. I was adviced to do so, when i installed Windows. Should i change IDE -> AHCI , maybe ?

Which Disk number was your SSD when you installed Windows ? Disk 0 ?

Yes my SSD was the only drive present when I first installed Windows apart from the optical drive.

I think maybe your second reference to the SATA/IDE mode relates to another controller that the optical drive resides on. That would agree with the advice to run in IDE mode for that controller.

 Hi guys,please help,I'm several days searching what is wrong,but still confused.Ok,I'm new it this but desided to build myself.
 GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 + I7 2600k + Intel 510 120gb ssd for os + 500 WD hdd for storage ( got some more hdds for future storage)
 Ok,first I made a big mistake: I plugged my ssd to SATA 3_0 (intel 6gb/s) and I plugged mu hdd to GSATA 7 (Marvell 6gb/s).Installed windows and it happened that system reserved partition appeared on hdd and I did not see this hdd at all .Ok,after I reinstalled windows,I cleared all partitions on windows installation,switched off,unplugged hdd,installed os on ssd.Ssd is in SATA 3_0 intel port.Connected hdd to marvell port again,made new partition.In BIOS got PCH SATA Control mode to AHCI,disabled XHD,got GSATA3 (Marvell) controller to IDE,transaction mode to bypass (Disables RAID),HDD priority to ssd.In Bios hdd shows as master in one of the IDE channels.Bios updated to F7.It seems working,BUT:
 boot time is 40 sec,on boot I see first IDE hdd,them ssd,then I see this:
Serial ATA AHCI BIOS, Version iSrc 1.20E Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Intel Corporation 23 
       **this version supports only hard disk and cdrom drives **
On both ssd and hdd I got the same microsoft driver date 21.06.2006,version 6.1.7600.16385
on both I got harddrive location : 0
in device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller  I got 2 ATA channel 0 and 2 ATA channel 1 and
Intel(R) Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller with driver version 10.5.0.1015
In Intel ssd toolbox I see both ssd snd hdd and it seems working ok,intel rapid programm sees only ssd.
I tried to disconnect hdd,but windows did not boot on ssd only!
It seems I done something wrong,and probaly somehow I connected this two drives.
Now I know that I need to install os on ssd first and then connect other hdds,here are the questions:
 How to reinstall os on ssd right way if os already on ssd?How to clean up completely my hhd?Which ports do I need to use for ssd:intel or marvell?Can I use intel and marvell ports,or better switch marvell's off?If I install ssd on intel port,which ports I need to use for hdds?Do I need to update intel chipset driver from 10.5.0.1015 to 10.6.0.1002?
 I will be very grateful for any help

Hi Stas and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Firstly what program did you use to update the BIOS when you flashed it ?

Did you elect to keep the DMI data at the time ?

You could try using "Secure Erase" in IDE mode on your SSD with no other disks attached to clean your drive completely.

When installing Windows first make sure that you have the SSD on SATA3_0 and in AHCI mode with no other drives connected. Make sure that you have all the latest drivers for everything before you start.

Put your optical drive on a port that uses a different controller and configure that to IDE mode.

Is the Windows disk a genuine copy ?

Try clearing the CMOS using these instructions please before you do anything else.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.
 
Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.
 
You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

 Thanks for that,I'll try to do as you advised,but I still don't understand couple thing.First of all I can't get what is DMI and where can I see that  (sorry,I'm new in computer building).I updated Bios version via USB Flash drive to latest version F7.I made everything by instructions and seems that I succeed.Yes I have genuine windows
 How can I perform Secure erase or format of ssd if I have os installed on it?It seems possible only if I will reinstall windows and format ssd during new installation.Can I clear my HDD by secure erase?
 So I'll plug my ssd to SATA3_0 which is intel's z68.And do I need to plug my optical drive to Marvellls GSATA 3_6 or 3_7,not any intels one?
 Can I update this drivers,Intel's and Ma

 I found also that it might be a problemm if during os installation on ssd I made partition first.I found advise not to do any partition and install os on free space.Finally is it ok to see on ssd and hdd microsoft driver version 6.1.7600.16385?

Hi

Don't worry there are no such thing as stupid questions. If you don't know then the most sensible thing is to ask.


Right then to try and answer your questions. The DMI is like an index of all the settings and hardware that makes up your system. Sometimes it is good to clear it out and make the system write a new one. You won't be able to find it anywhere as it is in the CMOS memory. When updating the BIOS it is a good idea to clear out the old data at the same time.

I was actually asking what program you used to run the update not what hardware you used. Was it @BIOS or QFlash ?

If you run a secure erase program it will overwrite all the SSD with 0s which will have the effect of cleaning all data from the drive. Google for a secure erase program.

You should leave the SSD unpartitioned as Windows will create it's own small partition for it's instal routine.

Make sure that you configure the SSD as AHCI mode and the optical drive as IDE mode on a seperate controller.

You are very welcome and that was the correct way to update the BIOS, much safer that using the @BIOS program. Don't worry if you have any porblems there is always someone here to help you out.
