New GA-G31M ES2L fan control help

Hello i have just recently bougt a new GB Motherboard (see subject for make) becuase my other mobo died which was also a gigabyte (p965 ds3p or somthing)
in my new motherboard i cant seem to control my system fan only cpu and thats limited to enable/disable,
is there a way of higher my system fan speed, its connected to the mobo by 3-pin

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

If there is no option in the BIOS for fan control then unless you add a dedicated fan controller you are stuck with whatever speed it is set at now, presumably full speed. I always prefer to install all my fans onto a seperate fan controller that gives complete control of all the fans in your system and even gives a readout of temperatures etc.

Ok thanks, just a another question when viewing my system fan speed it is around 1060rpm and sometimes goes higher 1080rpm
how do i know it is at its max only if my cpu fan is running 2500 i would like the system fan to run somewhere near the same

Well the speed depends on two things. One is the fan itself, each is made to spin at a certain RPM at maximum level, the other is the controller that is feeding the power to the fan. Generally SYS_FAN2 runs at half of the speed of the other fans as far as output is concerned.

aah ok so maybe the fan can only run at that speed? seems low tho and it is connected to sys_fan as there are only 2 fan headers cpu_fan and 1 sys_fan
i have ordered a xilent 80mm fan (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138590) and if i connect it to a psu will i get full rpm

Yes if you are not worried about being able to change the speed then it is by far the best way to connect a fan up. It stops the fan from drawing extra current through the motherboard and that is always good.

Thanks for your response i got a thunderblade from thermatek instead its very good and runs at 1800 rpms
just a shame there isn't many sys fan headers on mobo tho

Do you think an upcoming BIOS update may provide for fan control on some boards? I have a noisy CoolerMaster SickleFlow 2000 RPM blue 120mm front 3 pin fan on SYS-FAN2 (3 or 4 pin). It runs at around 1500 RPMs while the CPU and rear fan (another CoolerMaster 120 that came with the case) run about 1000, according to SpeedFan software.  I was hoping to replace my front fan it with a 4 pin but I see the BIOS doesn't support speed changing. The various simple fan controllers, not the drive bay ones, I've read about apparently get hot. I've tried wiring differently into a molex to get 7 volts to reduce the fan speed without success.  Perhaps a variable speed fan or one with reducers may suit me better? I've been researching and Noctura, Nexus, and Kama's seem to be very quiet.

 What are your opinions? So it's better to use a molex rather than a motherboard fan header?

Yes the various CPU coolers available can be much quieter such as the Noctua etc.  There is no reason that your fan shouldn't work when the voltage is dropped though by putting an inline resistance into the feed.

Thanks Mantis. I've modified my previous question after your reply. The fan specs are 2000 RPM, airflow 69.69 CFM with noise 19 dB-A. The fan gets irritatingly loud the longer it is on and no way is it 19 dB, perhaps a lemon. If so inline resistance may only be a temporary cure until it dies.

Firstly I want to thank you for your appreciative words but they are unneccessary and there are others here that help out too. The more people that participate the better the forum becomes.

I didn't realise that your fan was on the way out so to speak but that puts a different slant on things. I would just say bite the bullet and replace the fan now. If I understand right it is part of a CPU cooler. Well that is alright you can still replace just the fan. Find one the same size and performance to suit and swap it over. You usually don't even need to take the cooler off the motherboard to do it.
