Raid configuration
« on: August 12, 2011, 10:44:42 am »
I have GA-P55A-UD4 MB:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/produc ... id=3436#sp

I want to upgrade my system with:
2x ssd raid 0 config:
http://www.fortakas.lt/SSD_diskai/Corsa ... &ID=381019
or any other similar ssd s.

plus one more raid 0 4x hdd :
http://www.fortakas.lt/3.5_SATA/Samsung ... &ID=375671

OR no ssds, only hdds
8x hdd sata 2 raid 0 config:
http://www.fortakas.lt/3.5_SATA/Samsung ... &ID=375671

However my MB has some drawbacks:

Chipset:
6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_0, SATA2_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10
Marvell 9128 chip:
2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0 and RAID 1
* SATA3 RAID 0 4x and SATA3 2x performance are maximum theoretical values. Actual performance may vary by system configuration.
* SATA3 SSDs are not recommended for use in RAID 0 mode on Marvell SE9128 ports.

JMB362 SATA2 chip:
2 x eSATA 3Gb/s connectors on the back panel supporting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD
iTE IT8213 chip:
1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices

System with 2x ssds and 4x hdds should work nicely, however i don't know how the performance is going to scale. Also it is mentioned that i should not use 2x ssd in raid 0 configuration, why is that?  Maybe someone can give me an advice?

Other option is to make 6 x or 8 x hdd raid 0 system. As far as i understand this MB should support 6 x without any raid controlers. However 6 x hdd raid0 is not enough. as far as i understand 8x hdds requires a raid controller. It would be great if someone could give me and advice what system i should use with this MB, or should buy a new one.

Maybe  someone could suggest me an optimal solution.
