GA-Z68x-UD7-B3 Not reporting correct amount of system memory
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:38:18 am »
Hello again,
I thought everything was working fine until I noticed that my system was reporting only 4 gig of system ram when I have all four banks filled with 4 gig each. Total size should be 16 gig .  I have to admit, I dont know much about settings for ram, I thought it would recognize it and thats it.
I bought all the memory in a kit so all are the same. Corsair Dominator 16 GB ( 4 x 4 Gb each)   240 pin DDR3 SDRAM  1333 mhz
I went into BIOS and took a couple of pics.  I see one bank of ram being recognized and the others blank. Also see that the frequency is not correct?
Here what I got.
GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 .  Intel i7-2600k 3.4 GHz
Corsair Dominator 16Gb DDR3 .  Corsair 1200 watt psu
nVidia GeForce GTX 560ti  x 2 SLI
Western Digital - RE4  2Tb x(3) RAID 5
Seagate Barracuda XT  2Tb x (2) back up/storage drives
Corsair H100 liquid CPU cooling . Lite-on Blue Ray burner
LG  DVD burner

Hi stinch,

I  find your manual of mobo :
http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-z68x-ud7-b3_e.pdf

What is your version of Windows ( like windows 7 64bits, for exemple)?

I read on gigabyte home site :
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3847#sp
Your mobo is compatible with 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory.

Your Ram have a :
Guaranteed to work on all triple channel Intel platforms
Designed for use with all DDR3 motherboards with two memory channels
Voltage at 1.65V maximum in standard use.
Timing    9-9-9-24
Speed    DDR3 1333 maximum.

Source : http://www.corsair.com/memory-by-product-family/dominator/dominator-with-dhx-pro-connector-and-airflow-2-fan-16gb-triple-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmp16gx3m4a1333c9.html

So, ensure in Bios, you have a correct parameters.
Adjust the tension of the ram to get 1.5 volts.
Relax the timings of the ram for less than 9-9-9-24.

Check the result in windows with CPUID CPU-Z. See SPD Tab, check JEDEC less than 9-9-9-24.
You can enter the value of JEDEC in the Bios.

While it is defintiely possible that two kits would run together in the same system, there is a chance that you may need to reduce the speed of the memory due to motherboard chipset limitations when populating more than one memory module per channel on the board.  If you have problems mixing sets, it is suggested to manually lower the frequency of the memory.

Adjust the speed of ram at 1066 for start.

Please confirm the model of your RAM is the one I found on corsair.com
Otherwise specify it.

Hi and welcome.

I don't know because you didn't post it, but I suspect that you are only using a 32 bit operating system and that is why only 4GB is showing. That is the maximum that a 32 bit OS can address.

If this is not the case then it is down to more physical means and is probably to do with not having the correct amount of voltage to let the controller see them all.

oops sorry,  I forgot to mention I have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit version.  And yes that is the correct motherboard and system memory that you located with those links.
I'm not too familair with settings for system memory so all this is new for me. Setting timings and voltage.  But I will  absorb what you wrote
and check my BIOS for the settings.

I'm afraid I'll need a little guidance getting to these settings once i'm in bios.

Sorry to be so noobish. settings and adjustments relating to memory seem to be in several places and I just need to get familiar with where to go.
Thanks

Most of the settings that you need to alter are in the MIT section. Don't worry if they are somewhere else as well, they are just doubled up.

Just enter the timings like you have on the sticker on the modules in the first section the rest will be copied across automatically. Find the DRAM voltage and set that at whatever the default is plus 0.05v and make sure that the QPI/Vtt remains withing 0.5v maximum difference.

Hi DM, Thanks for the quick reply.  I thought it was strange that only one memory module was listed , the rest of the slots reported no memory in those slots. So what I did was take out all of the memory and put them back in.  Now I'm in bios and all are reporting to be there.  Strange  ???
But anyway, I'm in the MIT section and I have found that the memory multiplier was set to auto and reported 10.36  so I changed that to 13.33
Now i can see DRAM timing Selectable (SPD)  , it is set to Auto.  my options are auto, quick and expert.
Then below that is Channel A timing settings and Channel B timing settings . Once in there there is a bunch of numbers. Would I be changing the first  four ? Currently are at  CAS Latency time = 7   tRSD = 7  tRP = 7 and  tRAS = 20
Are those the numbers I need to change?

Hi Stinch,

In Bios, in the section of MIT (MB Intelligent Tweaker), in the Advanced Frenquency Settings:
Put Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P) to Enabled.
Systeme Memory Multiplier (SPD) To Auto
Memory Frequency (Mhz) To 1333 or 1066 (check it)
if not display put DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) in Quick Mode, and change manually the value of Profile DDR Voltage.

Take a time for read your manual of motherboard.
See page 39 ss.

Thanks Gloup_Gloup for the details you gave. By following what you explained( I hope I did it right)  I have two screen shots of CPUID on the memory & SPD.  I guess on SPD tab I would be looking at XMP column for the settings that are being used?  And memory tab showing the timings I am using?
Just wanted to be sure this looks right.

Hi Stinch,

ok i view your pictures.
Is right now.

Just try in Bios if you put Disabled to Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P).
Check if the Frequency of Memory is more speed or less than that now (668).

Sometime XMP Disabled or Enabled make a difference.

EDIT01: Check you entirely memory stick, by SPD Tab in Cpuid Cpu-z. See the top left, Memory Slot Selection.
The important thing depending on JDEC is to have the timing to 9-9-9-24 in Bios or in Cpu-z in Memory Tab.

Got it, Thanks Gloup_Gloup and DM. I checked bios again after restart and it now shows DRAM 1.608 and frequency at 1336  or close to it, 1337.56 ) . and the timings are correct for that XMP set to Profile1.  Which was the only other option in that setting. Disabled or Profile1 which had the settings already loaded.
Man thanks for walking me through that. I learned yet some more about the system memory.  I thought AUTO would do everything I needed for the speed of memory I install. But I can see it takes a little tweeking .   Thanks  million !
 Looking good now.  :)

Yes, all slots reporting same timing in CPUID and bios.  Thanks G_G   :)

Hi Stinch,  ;)

Happy to have helped.

And say that I do not have that kind of bios.
Let alone what kind of motherboard.
I did everything with the manual of the motherboard.

And my knowledge of course. ::)
