8 pin connector on 990fxa-ud3

basically my power supply has a 4pin connector not a 8pin connector ?
what should i do ?
buy a new PSU ?

you could spend money on a new PSU or you could get hold of one of these cables: http://www.maplin.co.uk/8-pin-12v-to-4-pin-power-cable-99521 which will also do the job and is a little cheaper.

You may get away with just plugging your 4 Pin ATX connector but it may not supply a steady flow of power, in which case you will either need a new PSU or one of the 8 pin leads I indictaed previously.

If you do want to use your existing 4 pin connector make sure you plug it into the top half of the 8 Pin socket, into pins 3, 4, 7 & 8 their the ones on the side nearest to the edge of the motherboard  (check your user's manual).

I would still recommend buying new PSU if money isn't that much of an issue. What kind of PSU is your current one (full name of PSU)? What kind of graphic card do you have? Do you OC your components? All in all you can buy some really nice PSUs for relatively small amount of money and make all of your PSU related problems go away for a long time...

I couldn't agree more and it is so common to see owners with a nice system apart from a crappy PSU, or maybe one that came supplied with a case! The PSU should be the prime component when starting a build as it is one of the most important parts and don't skimp on the watts! A nice quality hefty single 12v rail is what is needed and then you shouldn't have to worry about it for years.

The PSU is the heart of any PC and should be the first thing on anybody's shopping list when it comes to a new PC or rebuilding /updating an existing one.

That said, not everybody realises this until it is too late and they have spent  all of their money on other components. I know, I've been there and done that.    It is always easy to spend other people's money and sometimes other, more affordable options are required until the finances are in place to purchase the next essential part.

If the existing 650 Watt PSU is still functioning OK then using the 4 pin connector, as I stated before, should supply enough power for this system. If it doesn't then buying the 8 pin cable adaptor is the next best option if finances are tight.

If money is no object then of course, a good quality PSU is the perfect solution. It should last for several years and offer the necessary power cables for future expansion requirements.

Yes you really can't go far wrong with anything made by Corsair. Their power supplies are absolutely brilliant and they even come with a, in my case 7 year warranty, so that shows what faith Corsair have in their product. All carry at least a 5 year warranty so no worries there.The HX and the AX series are the best but none are bad quality.

Yes, I have a Corsair HX 750 which has a 7 year warranty, but I do like the AX 850 but then I would just be spoiling myself and that wouldn't do!!!!

I have the HX850 and am very happy with it but within a couple of weeks of me making my purchase they brought out the Gold AX series which is even better. Typical! They are built really well though and as I said before you can't go to far wrong with one.

Yes, Corsair probably has the best PSUs out there but to my knowledge it's also the most expensive. I find Seasonic to have one of the best paid/received ratios and not to mention that is the best PSU parts manufacturer (I dare to say even better than CWT!)! We all know that even Corsair buys Seasonic's PSUs and then make them by their fitting...

Agreed! The thing is as with many components there are only a few base manufacturers and everyone else buys from them and customises the base unit to make it their own. Even so there are only so many makes that I would be prepared to use like Seasonic, Corsair, Thermaltake, Enermax, Gigabyte, Coolermaster, Channel Well Technology, Antec etc.
