GA-X58A-UD3R RAID5 & AHCI Setup on Southbridge
« on: August 24, 2011, 04:53:13 pm »
Can someone tell me how to configure the Intel controller to keep my RAID5 setup while at the same time running AHCI for my SSD.  From what I have seen you are supposed to install the drivers for the Intel and then reboot and set the bios to AHCI and it will then be recognize after you boot into the SSD.  However it doesn't work as my array is not recognize.

Thanks.

Micro.

Welcome  micro_mag .....yes it can be frustrating

Hopefully you loaded OS under ACHI.......Yes....No....?

have only your SSD connected and get it running shmik under ACHI and fully patched...........shut down completely.

connect up raid array and reboot to BIOS......set Intel controller from ACHI to Raid....not XHD/Raid.........save and reboot....

This will/should activate the Ctrl-I prompt in BIOS.....press Ctrl-I when prompted (Don't miss it).........this should take you to the Raid configuration window.

Configure you raid how you want it ......save and reboot to windows.......start......right click on computer..........Manage.....storage.....Disc management......then follow the prompt to register the drive/s in the OS.........shut down again .......... reboot to BIOS and change RAID back to ACHI......save and reboot back to windows..........hopefully that it.......

Post back with a win please..........Aussie Allan

Thanks for the response Aussie.

I actually installed the OS on the Marvell with ACHI to confirm that it was poor performance and I did :(.

Then I moved the drive to the intel and tried to get both working but couldn't.  I take it that I will loose all of the data I have on my current RAID5 by doing this.

I will try this over the weekend and let you know if it works.  Got a lot of data to find a home for.

  Micro_Mag

I don't have much information to work with but the Intel ICH10R will support two separate Raid arrays.......you could try and get the OS/drive (raid or not) up and running then add the raid 5 second.........this does work as Ive done it several times in the past.

Either way....keep in touch with the result.......too many people have these problems, ....fix them ....and we never hear from them again........would be nice to know how you got there in the end so other members can benefit form your hard won knowledge.

I have just read through the thread and I would agree with Allan's last post there as the best course of action. The Intel controller should be quite happy running the SSD and the RAID.

UPDATE:

After many failed attempts and a lot more digging I was able to get the answer I needed from an Intel group.

Intel recommends that the bios be set to RAID as it gives the most flexibility in the future.  On this MB TRIM will be pass even when it is set to RAID.

Thanks for the help.

Micro.

I would qualify that point with other sources...... the net is just a huge repository of information......some true......some not!

there is no centralized body checking the validity of information that we read or post anywhere........only through cross checking can we be reasonable sure if a statement is true!

Ive loaded up raid countless times on this very board.......and although initial setup is with Raid (BIOS/Ctrl+I) I then revert to ACHI .....Don't worry, the Raid will stick...........I'd be very surprised if the Trim command would be actually be passed under Raid......unless you have configured a Dual Raid solution with 2 or more discs on one side and a single  Drive (SSD) on the other.........even then........you might be able to Manually set your Trim command to "0" but how do you know it is actually working..........especially with no ACHI Drivers installed at Boot?

This is the first time that I have heard anyone propose the fact of TRIM being supported under RAID. As from my experience this is not the case and I actually have the board just up from you the GA-X58A-UD7 and have run RAID and SSDs on it. As Allan says you can turn it on but it wont get passed to the drives.
