GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H with 1090T - What about the noise?

Hello everyone. I have an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T with an ASUS M4A77TD Pro and 16GB DDR3.
But since the power options in the bios of this mobo are AWFUL and when the pc gets a load of more than 20% the fans go crazy, I want to change it.

So I'm thinking about GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H. Is a good option? I want something to keep the fans to normal levels apart from having a good performance. With the Asus option I could install some software and keep the levels down, but this was only in windows. In Linux and/or while booting to windows, the noise was intolerable. So the options must be in Bios level.

There is of course another option and that is to use a decent fan controller to manage all of your fans. Much cheaper and will give you full control.

The Fan control on most Gigabyte motherboards is controlled by BIOS so not sure if there would be any real improvement in control over your exisiting plate.

You don't say which fan(s) is/are making the noise but the usual culprit is the stock AMD cooler and the best advice here is to change the stock cooler on the CPU.

If it is the Case fans then the advice given by Dark Mantis is probably the best way to go as you can then have total control over the speed of the fans, less speed usually equals less noise.

The problem is with the cpu fan which goes crazy when i do anything cpu dependent. (from 2K rpm idle to 5K in few secs). What are the options in the bios of this mobo or at similar mobos like this? In my ASUS there is absolutely no option for this. Just the AMD Cool&Quiet option that is enabled. Other than that, there are no presets for the fans.

BIOS options are basically the same with coolnquiet and it is automatically controlled as are the system fan headers. There is limited control offered with EasyTune6 but fan control is one of the weakest areas on Gigabyte Mobo's.

I don't agree with you on this. The AMD stock cooler is one of the noisiest coolers I have ever come across and any decent 3rd Party cooler will offer you much better cooling and a lot less noise.

I agree with Absic i use a zalmann 9700 with mine and it is noise free. The reason i changed was because the stock amd coolers are LOUD. I have 2 in the closet and they are both loud as heck to me in my case. I cant even hear my case fans or the zalmann cpu cooler i use now in a pure quiet room.

Yeah, if cpu cooler gives you noise problems, the best solution is to change it. I, for example, use CM 212+ with push pull on my 955BE and it's very quiet. It has auto controlled rpm ( the best solution for GB MBs since they have so poor implementation of fan regulations ) so it wont always be the coolest but you'll lower your noise drastically! Idle temp wont be much different from stock cooler but that's not so much important as long as you don't get high temperature and with this cooler you definitely wont!

I tested both stock and 212+ coolers at max usage and difference in max temp was a very nice 15°C while stock cooler screamed and I was barely able to hear 212+ because it never went above 1600rpm...

I must admit that at max rpm 212+ is loud but you'll never need that high rpm values...

I must sound like someone who works at CM but I'm not. I'm just saying that there is a small number of cpu coolers with a price tag around 25e that can do this much cooling

BTW, you (moderators) could send a notification to Gigabyte to improve their fan regulation options in bios and to put some more fan connectors throughout the motherboards because 4 connectors aren't enough especially if you can't even regulate them to our needs - of those 4 you can put 2 to auto or max and 2 are always at max rpm so it sucks!

But I really do think that GB should put more fan connectors on its MBs and to improve bios of the old ones so owners of their products could at least make fan rpms to their needs. I would very much benefit if I could put both of my cpu cooler fans to 1000rpm because this would be the best cooling/noise ratio but I'm limited either to put them at max which is too loud or to auto which is not that bad but it makes me mad when my friend tells me that he on his cheaper Asus MB can do that kind of regulation and therefore has lower idle temperatures! I said before that I don't care about idle but I'd pretty much like to have options...

I do have other option - to buy fan controller but I think that it's cheaper to by MB from another company and that's something that GB should consider greatly...

This being probably the best Gigabyte forum, there is probably someone in GB that reads this so how about sticky topic/poll in which people say if they would like better fan rpm regulations? Perhaps someone in GB would take that in consideration and make a lot of us a happy people

I do sound like I'm bit*hing but I like GB products and in past several years I've bought only GB but there are some issues that should have been taken care of a long time ago...

I think General Discussions is more for off topic posting. How about Thermal cooling solution & chassis as that would seem to encompass the general topic of fans and headers. Anyway I would suggest putting it there for a start and we can always move it at a later date if required.

Try and word the question/poll carefully so as not to be ambiguous and keep it clear.
