Gigabyte G1 Assassin High CPU Temp's And Slow SSD Performance.

Hi all I bought the Gigabyte G1 Assassin 2 day's ago and everything was fine and then yesterday I bought a new SSD for my machine.

Fitted the SSD and also changed the thermal paste to some better stuff because I only had really poor stuff when I built it as I forgot to buy some, so changed the thermal paste and installed the ssd.

Installed Windows 7 on to a normal hdd and got everything up and running, and then cloned it to the new ssd and put it on 1 of the white sata port's on the motherboard and it wouldn't boot.

I then rememberd I had installed windows without turning on AHCI in the bios so did another reload etc and plugged it back in to the white sata port and it wil boot in to windows eventually should only be taking, around 10 to 20 seconds to boot but mine is taking 1 to 2 minutes.

So thats the 1st problem slow SSD performance.

Second issue is that I have 2 system's both running a Core I7 cpu one is a 920 and the other is a 950 now with the chip's in the Assassin board I cannot overclock my cpu because it overheat's within a matter of minutes, and even at stock speed on the 950 it overheats.

When I ran prime95 on the 950 @ 3.06ghz my temp's went up to 85c per core and on the 920 @ 3.0ghz my temps go up to 81c per core and they were both reporting as using 1.244v at those speed's.

The Northbridge on the board is also extremely hot as well and is to hot to touch for more than 5 second's even when running at stock speed's and I have a large 240mm fan on the side panel, of my case blowing cold air from outside directly in to the case.

Now I am not running Air Cooling I am running Watercooling, using a Triple 120mm raditator which is on the cpu alone so my temp's should be no where near what they are.

So my question is, is this board faulty or is it normal that you cannot overclock on these boards unless you are using LN2 as your cooling.

Hi

Dealing with the SSD first I would just suggest starting over and do a fresh install of Windows from scratch and make sure AHCI is selected in the BIOS along with NCQ before you start. Hopefully that will take care of that problem, if not post back.

Secondly you don't give many details of the hardware involved but I too watercool and I would be first checking that you haven't got an airlock somewhere. Do you have a flow gauge ?  If so what does that tell you ?

Your NB shouldn't be that hot on idle and maybe you need more cooling in your case. Try a dedicated fan for the NB.

What cooling system have you got on ? What coolant are you using ?

Hi

1st the SSD I have done a fresh install of window's again and it is now booting on the Sata 3 port (white port) in around 13 second's from when the windows square pop's up with windows wrote below it, but when benchmarking the ssd I am only getting read speed's of 208MB and write speed's of 100MB when they should be 500MB+, as the drive I am using is the Corsair Force 3 120gb Sata 6gb so not sure what's going on there but I think the southbridge maybe faulty on the board and not allowing the full use of the sata port's bandwidth.

As for the cpu.

I am using a Laing DDC pump, with a 5.25" bay resovoir where the pump fit's in to it.

I am using a Heatkiller 3.0 cpu block on the cpu.

I was using a XSPC RX360 radiator but the pump is to weak to pump the fluid through it so I have swapped it at the moment for a thing 360mm radiator.

I am using 6x Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1900rpm 110CFM fans in push pull, on the radiator to help shift the air through to help to cool the fins etc on the radiator.

I am using the Xigmatek Eyslium case.

I have done another prime95 run this morning and my temp's went to 82c per core at 3.0ghz on the 920 and when I ran OCCT the test stopped after 2 min's saying the cpu was too hot to carry on with the stress test.

The 920 came out of my second machine where it was on air with the stock intel cooler and was only reaching 65c when running full load.

The 950 was running in my last board which I should have learned my lesson not to buy Gigabyte board's from but that was running at 4.3ghz under water using the same radiator I am using at the moment and lower CFM fans and, never went above 80c.

My last board was a Gigabyte EX58 Extreme which was less than 2 year's old but I just threw it in the bin as it was sent back to Gigabyte twice for the same fault and each time was never fixed, which is wy now I will never buy another Gigabyte board again after that board and now this board looks to be faulty

Can you answer the two questions I asked please ?

Also have you flashed the SSD to the latest firmware ?

This is the coolant I am using

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1l-feser-one-fluid-uv-green-for-water-cooling-systems-(non-conductive-10-s)

Feser One UV Green

And I don't have a flow indicater but I can see the fluid moving in the Res and it's moving quite quickly.

The Feser1 is well known for clogging and blocking up the fine matrixes of the blocks. I would still hold that it is most likely a blockage or airlock. I assume that you have installed the blcoks properly ? I use nothing but distilled water in my loops now ( I was caught with the Feser1 fluid myself ).

Also make sure that the fans are all blowing the same way.

well I just changed the waterblock to the same type but all copper rather than a thin copper plate and white plastic on it.

Tried to boot the board and it powers up and then powers down instantly and doesn't go any further so it look's like the board is dead so will be taking it back to the shop on Tuesday and getting a refund.

OK let us know how you get on with the new motherboard. I can't say I am really surprised that the board has died with those temperatures though.

Well I took the board out of the case and gave it a real good look over using a very bright light, and found nothing on the face of the board with all the slot's etc.

When I turned it over I started looking from the bottom to the top and couldn't see anything until I got near the cpu socket where there is 4 small chip's and found that 2 of them have blisterd.

I also swapped the Waterblock like I said and found that there are some silver bit's inside the block stopping the water from actually contacting the copper plate, but the one I swapped it to had nothing inside it so the fluid went straight on to the copper block.

But I will be buying a MSI board for use in my 2nd pc and using my Rampage II Extreme which is currently in there as my main board, until the new Intel CPU's come out and then will rebuild then.

Problem now is trying to find out if it has damaged my Brand New SSD and my Core I7 950 but won't find out until I get back up and running later.

Cheer's for the help though.

Well I wish you good luck with your rebuild with whatever board you decide on. I would suggest asking the retailer where you are returning the motherboard to let you know what the problem was with it.

With a Zalman fan cooler only run at about 32-35 C stock with Intel i7 950. Fan is set at very low speed.
Also added 2nd hanging fan though PC in on bench open & 2nd fan not fitted at present.

I think he had more than just the usual cooling problem Tinker. The temperatures were a bit crazy.

I realise that DM, was just relating what the particular temp of that CPU should have been. Could have
cooked his meals on that MOBO, so much for water cooling.   ::)

Nothing wrong with water cooling but it needs to be done right the same as air cooling. There are many pitfalls that are ready to catch you if you're not careful.
