GA-X58A-UD5 shutdown-reboot endless cycle
« on: September 01, 2011, 11:04:12 pm »
I have not installed any new hardware or software.  WHen I tried to shutdown the other night they system did so and then 1 second later booted itself.  It does this each time I ask it to shutdown.  I tried both WIndows start menu shutdown and command line as well.  The only way to get it down is to hold in the power button.  I have the Rev 1 mobo and am using the F6 bios.

Since it goes all the way down the reboot seems to be a hardware based problem.

In the bios setup under Power Management all wakeups are disabled.  I tried moving the LAN connection to the secondary port.  All to no effect.

PLease advise on how to correct this problem.  Thanks.

Hi

The first thing to try is to clear the CMOS.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Thanks for the suggestion.  It did indeed fix the problem.  I saved the CMOS to BIOS first and then after the brain-dump, restored the CMOS back.  Now,although I can shutdown, 1 of the 3 disks on the Intel Raid controller isn't recognized as a member of the array - thus the array is offline.

BIOS says that teh SMART status is not recognized.  I don't think that they disk is bad since I checked the Intel Manager before doing any of this and the array status was all good.  Any ideas? I really don't want to reload from the 6 TB backup array (thankfully I do have a backup).

Well I would have done it the way I suggested and I don't think you would have encountered this problem then.

Did you reset the BIOS to enable your RAID before booting into the OS the first time ? Otherwise you will lose your RAID array. I can only suggest trying it now and see if it will pick it up.

Yes, I did.  And I can report what I think the fundamental problem is.  My case has a 4 drive bay and I am only using 3 of them.  I moved the disk that is not registering with the BIOS to the open position and rebooted.  It found all 3 drives and booted normally.  All is now working.  My theory is that something has gotten hosed on that one SATA port and that was causing the reboots. Reloading CMOS cleared it, but the failure mode on the port is now preventing further use.  Since the drive information is intact the intel chip gigured out how to load the array properly.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well I am glad that you got it up and running again anyway for whatever reason. ;)
