GA-870A-USB3 v3.1 vry long beep
« on: September 23, 2011, 10:51:03 pm »
Hi
PC
pII 965 c3
GA-870A-USB3 v3.1 new
2x 2gb GEIL ENHANCE corsa 1600MHZ, 1.5v, GE34GB1600C9DC
Saphire ATI HD4850 512mb (tested and working)
PSU OCZ 500W only 1 4 pin 12v for cpu(can this cause this kind of problem?) tested another psu a 500w gereric to se if its still had the problem, didnt work.

i got this 2 new itens for my PC, the GA-870A-USB3 v3.1 and 4gb geil , now my pc wont boot up, all coolers start, and a vry long beep starts until reboot and vry long beep again.
VGA tested in all PCI-E slots.

Manual say this beep indicate that there is no vga on pci-e slots.

if i remove only memory , only vga or both, vry long beep again.

When the motherboard start the check for error have and order or its all the same time?, if there is a error with memory it still check for vga errors or stops there for beep? if there is a error with vga it still checks for memory error or stops there for beep?

btw sry about the bad english.

thx for help.

Silence, long single beeps, or series of short beeps indicate a problem with the memory. If you get short beeps verify that the memory is in the appropriate motherboard slots.
Can you try with just one stick of ram in one slot then reboot then if it beeps move ram to different slot and try again do this with each stick of ram at a time to verify if any slot or stick of ram works. Post back results please.

That psu is borderline for that system.  Should have a psu that has a 4+4 pin connector to power that board with a 24 pin. That psu says 18 amps on a 12 volt rail times 2 which really mean it is probably splitting the 18 amps over 2 rails or a little over 22 amps. Reading reviews of that power supply i see others posting problems with it. But it should have a 8 pin cpu plug on it. Your 4870 draws real close to 18 amps on load which doesnt leave much for the rest. Can you get a better single rail 12 volt psu rated at 30 amp or higher to test with if so do that also please.

i did all kinds of test i could in here, tested all memory slots with dual or single.
the beep is a vry long beep and a pause, in that pause looks like a reboot, vga lets restart and coolers seems to slow for some sec.
reading all the errors ppl have in the forum plus the tests i did with memory and how the beep dont change no matter what i do with memory slots, i think is a memory problem, i hope it is, its the easy problem.
i rly think its not psu problem , its not ideal but it can hold at least to enter in the bios, and i didnt get there yet.
its a 4850 not 70, and a ocz 400w psu hold it with 0 blue screens for 3 years.

thx

Hi

I think that it is most likely a PSU problem as it is too small and it doesn't have the 8 pin 12v supply which is necessary for stability. Change that first and if the issue is still there then at least you have a good grounding to work from.

Never buy a cheap and nasty power supply they can go wrong and take out all you other expensive components at the same time. Not only that just because it is marked 600W often they are nowhere near that rating. Purchase a good make like Seasonic, CWT, Corsair, Thermaltake, Enermax, Gigabyte, Coolermaster, Antec, etc and try and get one with a single 12V rail if possible. I would advise you to get one of about 650W minimum depending on your hardware demands.

Over time a psu loses amps and lowers the power. Go to the following link and it will give you a round about idea what you need then up it a little.

i did more than 1 time this calculator it says 396W recommended and less than 350 in full load, that when i put more coolers and stuff than im using, and remember im running the pc with all turn off, only video, this is  not a psu problem.
what i rly need to solve my problem is know if this memory is compatible with the board, i dont have another memory to test it now.

looking all the tests i did, its down on 2 problems,  memory not compatible or problem with board dont recognizing my vga on slot.
looks more the memory but i can only be sure with new ones.

thx

Well they arent on the approved list if that is what you are asking but then alot of times the ram i use isnt either at the time. If you really think it is a ram problem RMA the ram since it is new. Then if that doesnt work you can always RMA the board if that doesnt fix it go get a new psu. By RMA the ram i mean take it back and get an approved set.

Also 4870 doesnt draw much more than a 4850 does and from experiance i owned 3 different 4850's and none of them worked right so i finally got a 4870 and it ran fine till replaced with what i have now.

my hd4850 is with me since 08 working rly good on my last build and that with my ocz 400w and 500mhz overclock on my phenon I x3.
i try to avoid rma every time i can in here, im from brazil and its rly hard to get a nice rma in here, and comp stuff is always 2x, some times 3x the price u pay in other countries, and i got it online from another city, on top of that the mail is having a strike(70% workers stopped).

need to find some dd3 to do some testing.

thx for help m8, im back when i have it tested.

Yes i can see how it would be hard to RMA there. Its what friends are for ask one see if u can get some other ram.

Hi there,

If you think the problem is due to your RAM, have you tested it with MemTest?

If not that is the first thing I would do. Download MemTest from here: http://www.memtest86.com/download.html and then test each stick individually for at least 10 passes.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I was hoping you would have access to another PC (even a friend's machine) for testing purposes.

If yoiu can't get your  system to even boot try removing all the memory from the board anmd thenm try again. It should try and fail but emitting one long and one short beep. If it doesn't try clearing the CMOS thoroughly.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.
