GA-990FXA-UD3, phenom ii x4 955 be, g.skill ram
« on: September 26, 2011, 04:28:53 pm »
hello.  new to the forums.  i am looking at purchasing a GA-990FXA-UD3 to replace my asus mobo.  i currently have 8gb total ram.  2 sets of (2x2gb) g.skill f3-12800cl9d-4gbrl.  in the memory qvl, it states that the 8gbrl will work.  i want to know if the 4gbrl will work.

i hope someone can answer my question before i purchase this board.  i don't know if it helps, but my processor is a c2, not a c3.

thanks.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Not too sure about G-Skill as it is not a brand that I use myself and generally it is better to have a single matched kit of RAM rather than two different sets to give you a better chance of it working.
That, said, I don't see why it won't work, especially if it is already running OK on your current motherboard. The best advice I can offer is to try and keep the matched pairs together when putting them into the motherboard. I had a similar situation where I had 2 kits of 4GB Corsair RAM (when it was a lot more expensive) and they didn't appear on the QVL but they worked fine across three different motherboards.

I figure that the fxa is an upgrade from the xa.  Am I correct to presume this?

Yes, pretty much. The main difference between the 990FX and 990X North Bridge chips are the number of PCIE ports they handle.

For a direct comparison between the GA-990FXA-UD3 and the GA-990XA-UD3 check here: http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/comparison/list.aspx?ck=2&pids=3996,3901
