New FX processors and GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboards ?
« on: September 30, 2011, 10:19:55 am »
Hello,

I have the mobo from topic revision 1.0 or 1.1(cant remember now) and I was wondering is there any chance that gigabyte will release bios update so new fx processors can be used ? looking at gigabyte site it says this mobo with revision 3.1 will be am3+ capable but nothing about earlier revisions. I wrote to gigabyte and only thing they replied for this question is that "this information will be available after FX series premiere" so nothing useful.

Maybe someone in here have more insight or just want to share his opinion on this :)

Thank you

Hi there,

Just had a similar question raised here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,6796.0.html but with teh GA-790XTA-UD4 motherboard and Gigabyte's response was that there wouldn't be a BIOS update for that board due to BIOS limitations.

My best guess would be that the same would apply with your motherboard.  :'(

Thx for response, looked at the previous topic and its older mb also like mine revision 1.0 but that other mobo didnt have other revisions only 1.0 mine has 1.0, 1.1, 1.4 and 3.1 with am3+ so I still have hope that maybe it will be possible with UD3P also including the fact that gigabyte didnt response to me in a way they responsed to the guy with UD4 they only wrote this info will be avaiable later....

Few more words from me, I will be really dissapointed especially with AMD and also Gigabyte if FX series wont be compatible with UD3P series as they released many revisions of it, its a very popular mobo as it had good price and capabilities with good reviews to back it up. Thats not what people were signing for when going for AMD and AM3 socket its great advantage was supposed to be compatibility with new processors in the future and now what ? For example MSI already confirmed list of even old and really cheap mobos that will have bios upgrade to allow them use of am3+ processors

Hope im wrong but if not i will probably say final goodbye to amd and probably gigabyte :(

I know what you're saying but you need to remember that when a lot of these motherboards were originally released the AM3 processor had just come along. AM3+ was in the distant future and future upgradability was probably not even considered. The later revisions, such as the 3.1 of your motherboard does have the AM3+ Socket and the larger BIOS chips needed to support AM3+ CPU's.

If you switch to Intel then you need to consider the fact that they seem to release a new socket with every new processor so the upgrade path is more costly.

absic I also know what you are saying but I really hoped AM3 will have longer life at least until AM4 or whatever it will be called, as i remember most am2 mobos were capable to run am2+ processors and here we have am3+ and most am3 boards will be left to rot. You also have to remember Intel cpus apparently are much more powerful, processors on lga 1156 which i could bought instead of am3 are kicking amd ass all over the place and who knows they might still be better than new fx series so their lives are overall longer as they are simply better than any am3 cpu

So its because of smaller bios chip older boards or revisions wont be able to handle am3+ processors ? This is the whole problem and it cant be bypassed by gigabyte with making some genius bios upgrade ? And I still have no 100% confirmation that my 1.0 revision have this smaller chip.

The thing that bothers me with Gigabyte is already mentioned by me that MSI and apparently also ASUS will be releasing bios upgrades for older mobos to use FX series nothing official about this from Gigabyte.

I would have thought that it should be possible at least to make a daughterboard with a bigger BIOS chip on that would simply plug into the motherboard and take over from the onboard BIOS that is in use now. It would be cheap enough to manufacture and I would think that most people would be happy to pay the small fee for being able to use their motherboards with the new CPU.

What is the likelihood of Gigabyte producing a daughterboard DM, have they done this in the past?

To be honest my relationship with Gigabyte doesn't go back that far and so I am not sure, probably absic could tell you. I just remember many years ago there were a few of them on the market for different things like CPU upgrades when the motherboard's socket wouldn't take the new processors so they brought out daughterboards to enable the upgrade. You could always ask GGTS though.

Hi DM,

I don't doubt what you say, just asking because you may know that Gigabyte may have something in the pipeline. But if there is no BIOS for older boards, like mine, then Gigabyte may not manufacture a daughter board.

No, sorry. I don't know something you don't, just purely an idea. It would be easy enough to put into action though if they wanted to.
