Only boots with 1 stick of RAM (Corsair XMS2 & GA-965P-S3)

Only boots with 1 stick of RAM (Corsair XMS2 & GA-965P-S3)
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:53:46 pm »
Motherboard: GA-965P-S3 Rev 3.3
RAM: TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX

The computer boots fine with 1 stick of the XMS2 RAM.

I tested the sticks and both of them work in both of the slots I am trying to boot them in, but it will only boot properly if there is only 1 stick plugged in either slot.

With both sticks plugged in, the computer will quickly restart twice, and then it will run the third time, but the screen won't turn on and no post either.

With my old generic RAM sticks, and the computer boots fine with both of them plugged in, but not with my corsair ones.
I'm not mixing the RAM either. I'm just trying to get 2 XMS2's to work.

I've altered the BIOS settings a bit, made sure it was 800 Mhz, 5-5-5-18.
I've tried changing DDR2 OverVoltage Control to +0.1V, +0.2V, +0.3V, changed the FSB and MCH to +0.1V, and to 667 Mhz, but it still won't boot 2 sticks  :(

Hi and welcome.

The first thing is are they sold as a matched kit ?

If so are you sure they are listed as compatible with your motherboard ?

Are they single or double sided modules ?

They came in a matched kit package.

The 1GB version of the RAM is compatible with the MB, but the list is quite old, so maybe the 2GB versions weren't out or weren't tested yet.

They are double sided.

Thanks.

Thanks for the answers and I suspect that if the double sided larger modules aren't listed probably because of the timescale they might be pulling too much power. What I would suggest is to try them on their own as dual channel and leave the other module out. It might also help to increase the memory voltage and the FSB voltage to giver the controller a bit more power. Try also relaxing the memory timings . If that doesn't work I think you are probably going to have to admit defeat. Sorry. :-\

It doesn't help that Corsair's Memory Finder QVL doesn't even recognise the motherboard model number. ::)
