Gigabyte GA-880GMA-USB3 --- Loose part on motherboard.
« on: December 04, 2011, 01:45:54 am »
So, I got the Gigabyte GA-880GMA-USB3.
While installing the CPU and heatsink, I noticed the Turbo 3D part located directly below the CPU was a bit loose and wobly.
It doesn't seem to be causing any harm, but I'm not sure if I should just RMA it or go on with the build and see if it still works.
Here's a picture of the mobo so you can see where I'm looking.

Hi JRocksMyLyfe,  ;)

Have you check if under motherboard, a ''grip'' is correct inserted ...

I am not sure about this piece.
If you have a possibility to add a little picture here.. under and maybe base surface of Turbo 3D part.

Well, the northbridge seems to have readjusted itself into place without being loose anymore.
I'm still in the process of putting together the pc. I'll have to check temps once I boot it up.

Hi

It shouldn't be anything to worry about and the worst case scenario is that the heatsink might not be 100% contacted to the surface of the chip as the TIM has moved.  However it is unlikely to make a huge difference and I would just suggest keeping an eye on the temperature for a while when you first run it.

Ultimately you have spent your hard earned $'s on this MB......if you have a doubt then return it as it may be better in the long run. However, the choice is yours.

I have built PCs with 4 such gigabyte 785/880 version  boards  recently and there is nothing to worry about ,the main heatsink is below the flashy cover ,the assembly is spring loaded and cannot rotate ,at worse it rocks a little and gives a clicky sound . its not been a problem for me ,and on 3 of the 4 boards it was like that . just refrain from using it as a handle and you will be ok .
