Over the years I have used a succession of Abit m/boards with various AMD processors. My current build is nearly five years old and is based on an Abit KN9S with an Athlon 64 x2 4400. I feel it's time to upgrade.
I was tempted by the dark side, but even though AM3 is near end of life I decided to stick with AMD mostly for reasons of up front cost, and I'd really like only to swap out my m/board, CPU and RAM and re-use the rest of my system including the ATAPI optical drives.
Any new m/board has to be Linux friendly with no unsupported 3rd party controllers, as well as offering legacy ports like floppy and IDE. Hence my interest in the GA-880GM-UD2H which is available at around £60 at the moment, a bit of a bargain..
I have a couple of question:
1. Could someone please confirm I have read the supported CPU list correctly for version 1.4 of the GA-800GM-UD2H and that either of these CPU can be used “out of the box”:
Athlon II x4 640
Phenom II x4 960T
2. I'd like to use 2x4GB DDR3 RAM sticks with this m/board. Which corsair modules would you recommend?
I've yet to read the manual and could well need help with the best/suitable BIOS settings. After 5 five years, I'm a bit rusty on this side of things.
PS I vaguely remember there being something about there being a right and wrong way to first power up a new build, i.e. PSU rocker switch on before wall socket switch on, or vice versa. Is this a possible gotcha?
Thanks,
Chris.
