hot 470 soc

Hi, I bought my 470 SOC in late december last year, didnt know what temps were ok, WoW (maxed out) was running at about 90c, CoD black ops 80-85c. I had no idea of how hot it was supposed to be so I thought it was ok.
A few months back I started playing BFBC2, Dota2 and now BF 3, temperatures reach 100c in all of these games, the drivers are crashing sometimes and in BF games the computer sometimes locks up.
I use 2 monitors 1920x1080, idleing 60-70 degrees, 40-45 with one screen, same temperatures under load.

The graphic card is as hot in my friends computer and his 460 runs at <75 full load in my computer.
I guess it's to late to RMA and the only thing I think I can do about it is reapply thermal paste.
I've never done this on a GPU before, and I cant find a guide for the windforce x3, some help woud be appreciated.

Hi lororo and welcome to the forum.

Yes....not a good situation...but first things first. I'll assume it is a Gigabyte graphics card...if so contact Technical Support to get some advice first.

The warranty on some cards is 3 years...do you have any documentation to this effect...did you have to register the card when you purchased it. I have had a XFX GPU and now a Sapphire GPU and had to register both to recieve some support.

I would hold off doing something yourself until you hear from Technical Support, but as a plan B....you could take it to your local PC store to see what they make of it.

I would remove the heatsink, clean off the factory TIM, and put some Arctic Silver silver on there. Then evenly re-mount the heatsink and re check your temps. This procedure has helped me countless times over the years.
