GA-P55-UD5 Issues running Memory at 1600MHz

GA-P55-UD5 Issues running Memory at 1600MHz
« on: October 24, 2009, 04:28:31 am »
I am wanting to run my memory at full speed on my i7 860 (133x21 = 2.8GHz).  I have found 2 ways of achieving this.  Enabling the XMP or changing the system memory multiplier from auto to X12.  This does run my CPU at default speed and the RAM at 1600Mhz.

The issue I am suffering is as soon as this is enabled my CPU dynamic multiplier (and turbo) stops working.  Usually if under little load it will change the CPU multiplier to X9 and then under high load Turbo kicks in and pushes up to X22.   Once I put my RAM to 1600MHz the CPU multiplier is locked at a fixed x22.

I also tried to see if it were some kind of frequency limit before it stops working so I set my ram back to auto multiplier and XMP off and basically started to increase the Bclk as soon as I go above 148MHz then the dynamic CPU multiplier dies and gets locked to X22.

I have tried Bios Version F4 and am now on the Beta version F5f and it made no difference.

Anyone else had this issue and found a solution, or is it just a bug with the bios?

Hi,
When you manually o/c, the CPU dynamic multiplier (and turbo)  will stop working.
From what i have read on various forums and mags,
Regards

as i said before it works between 133MHz to 148MHZ then stops working.

by changing the memory multiplier I am not actually O/C the CPU

Gigabyte has been unhelpfull and pretty much trying topush the blame onto someone else not even a suggestion.  This was their response to the same question

"Thank you for your kindly mail and enquiry. In fact, the overclock result will depend on your peripheral devices, and the hardware overall performance, we will not guarantee any result caused by system overclocking, but basically the situation you described is normal.

If you have any further question or suggestion about our products/service, please do not hesitate to contact with us. We will try our best to help you resolve the problem ASAP.

Ok well I have found a solution after playing around with the Dynamic Energy Saver™ 2 application I noticed that the low power state bit was never active when i had my memory @ 1600MHz. So in bios i changed the "C3/C6/C7 State Support" Option from Auto to Enabled. Hey Presto its working.

As I first thought its a bios/motherboard issue/bug

Its still not working as well as when its all set to default .. but its a start I guess and hopefully gigabyte will address it in their next bios version

Yep,  I have had the same issues and reached the same conclusion as you.   The c3,36 state is 1 of the keys.  I have had to use f4r beta bios due to my usb keyboard no being detected under boot.  When i enable c3.c6 i have problems in certain games that seem to freeze and lockup completely.  Think its maybe a buggy bios.
