GA-890GPA-UD3H not able to boot from USB
« on: December 16, 2011, 07:41:19 pm »
There must be something simple I'm missing ...

I used unetbooting to create a bootable USB stick containing Unbuntu 12.04 (since it's too large to fit on CD).

Then, I went into Advanced BIOS options to set it to boot from USB.  But, instead of one USB option, I found several:
-- USB-Floppy
-- USB-CD ROM
-- USB HDD

I tried setting the BIOS to each one, and none of them worked.

The only one that came close was USB HDD, but when it tried that is said Operating System Not Found.

So, is there no way to boot from USB on this motherboard?

Make sure the USB pendrive is plugged in before you power up the PC, press F12 to get to the BOOT Menu and then choose the USB-HDD option for booting, it should work fine.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I have the same board as you. Formatted my pen drive with DOS. Boots just fine (absic is correct - use USB HDD).

OK ... tried that and still does not work.  When the PC boots, I see it accessing the pendrive.  Then, I press F12 and select USB-HDD.  It then says NOT FOUND when I try to boot from the pendrive.

I made this pendrive using unetbootin from inside Ubuntu.  When I open the drive, it looks like all the files are there.

So, I guess I'll try remaking is using unetbootin from Win7 -- and see if that works.

Hi,

Have you tried the USB header at the rear of the motherboard out of interest?

OK ... tried the Universal USB Installer, downloaded from PendriveLinux.com -- and the resulting USB booted fine.

So, the problem must have been that unetbootin, even though it claimed to create the USB properly, in fact, did not.

Thanks for the help, folks.
