Questions about XHD and RAIDxpert
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:09:15 pm »
Hello guys. I was just wondering what does the XHD function do? Since I have two SSD at Raid 0, and another HDD, do I still need this function?
Anyone ever tried XHD (eXtreme HardDrive), I installed it, and so far it only shows me two options "automatic" and "manually". And no matter what I choose, nothing happenes.

Second, would Raidxpert help improved my SSD performance ?

Hi there,

the answer to XHD is no, it won't help in your situation and it won't improve things.

RAIDXpert is more a control interface for monitoring the state of the RAID Array. It can be useful in some scenarios, although I have to say that in my day-to-day use I haven't really needed it at all.

Using SSD's in a RAID0 Array I found the best way to improve performance was to increase the Stripe Size on the Array which gave me much better read/write speeds than the default settings. It is also worth bearing in mind that using a RAID Array doesn't allow for TRIM to be passed to the SSD's. Hopefully, your drives utilise Garbage Collection (most of the newer SSD's do) which is fine but you do not to leave your system idle for this to work properly. If performance drops to a lower standard, which it may do over time then it is best to delete the Array, secure erase the SSD's and then rebuild it. Making a System Image for restoration purposes is the best way to avoid any major headaches on this score.

Thanks for your help. I am so regret that I did not buy one of those 120g SSD such as Force 3 from Corsair.
But anyway, a lesson is learned.
I checked , the Trim is enabled by default. so I did not see any difference.
The default stripe is 64k, so you suggest me to increase to 128k. I have seen people on youtube done that before.

When I was testing various options on my own system I found that increasing the stripe to 128k gave better performance with my ADATA SSD's in RAID0. Things could be a little different on your own but it is worth experimenting to find the optimum setup.

yes, I set it to 128k, it does have a better performance now.

Pleased that has helped. Another thing that can sometimes improve things further is disabling the CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) and the C3/C6 State Support (if your CPU supports these). Both of these features can be found under the MIT Section of BIOS CPU Advanced features.
