GA-990FXA-UD3 does no post (yesterday it did)
« on: January 16, 2012, 05:36:56 pm »
Hello,

what a strange problem! My setup is as follows:
GA-990FXA-UD3
AMD Phe II X4 975      3600 AM3
4x 4GB Kingston KVR
Geforce GTX 560 Ti
750Watts Antec Power Supply
Windows 7 x64 / Linux 2.x/3.x x64
This setup worked for MONTHS now and I didn't encounter any problems with it, since today.
When I came home I found my PC in a kind of sleep state. Space woke it up though, but the Win7 User Logon did not appear (although the wallpaper of it has been loaded). NVM, i thought, reboot and u'll be fine. How wrong I was! After hard resetting the MB it didn't ran into post after powering it on again. I did a ClearCMOS a couple of times (I even took out the battery). Fans/Network LED/HDDs, GFX-Fan, everything runs. All power cords are connected (computer hasn't been moved).
Any hint?

Thx

remove gfx card and power on: no post
replace gfx card with gefroce 8600gts: no post
removed RAM and tried every module in single configuration: no post

pc speaker IS connected (correct wiring).

Have you tried an extended clear of CMOS?

Remove the power lead from the PC and also remove the CMOS battery but leave it out for at least one hour before trying to restart again.

The only other thing I can think of is to try removing everything from the PC except the CPU, GPU and one stick of RAM. Also remove your USB devices and try a different keyboard (PS/2) if you have one, as sometimes the problem can be something as simple as a faulty mouse.

Also check that the wife hasn't unplugged it to put the vacuum in!  ;)

Seriously check all the power connections to the motherboard.

I followed your recommendations without success.
I'm frustrated right now and don't know what to do, except replacing the MB.

Power connections are all in place. ATX24+4, CPU, PCIe.
And yes, I paid every power bills.

And no, I don't have a wife, so I never vacuum at any time.
But I appreciate your help, thx.

I really don't know why the PC would work one day and not the next. It's really strange, especially with the testing that you have tried so far.

Have you tried the GPU in the 2nd PCIE X16 slot or even in the PCIE X4 slots?

I put the GPU in the 2nd PCIe 16x slot, but nothing changed.

Sorry for my cynicism, but I have to admit that I could easily replace this MB with some wires and a paperclip, as it does nothing else than giving power to peripherals/fans. *sigh*

edit:
ps: it can complain about missing RAM, just powered it on without any module in it. PC-Speaker is working: proven.

Have you been able to try different RAM Modules?
Do you have a different compatible CPU to try?

Without the proper gear for testing or checking components, this kind of thing can be a real pain to troubleshoot. Your best idea might be just to RMA the motherboard as, if there is a fault it can be fixed and if there isn't a problem with the board then you will know that there is another component causing the problem.

Due to lack of alternate components, I'm not able to do further testing.
RMA is what I'll do now.

Thanks for your help anyways, you're much faster than official Gigabyte support.

Still using this setup:
AMD Phe II X4 975    3600 AM3 (not overclocked or modified in any way)
4x 4GB Kingston KVR (tested every module in single configuration)

Have you manually configured the memory timings and voltage or is it still set to auto ?

I didn't alter the memory timing configuration, so I assume it is set to auto.

Monitor is working perfectly.

The Everythings-OK!-Beep is missing, too, though, and there is no HDD activity after everything has been powered up.
