Help diagnose this no display, no beeps failure of a 1st build?
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:15:26 am »
This was my 1st build and I thought I did all the research - but I've failed with this assembly:

Gigabyte A75M-UD2H AMD Socket FM1 for AMD Llano CPU, HDMI, Dual Graphic Micro ATX Motherboard

AMD A8-3870K APU with AMD Radeon 6550 HD Graphics 3.0GHz Unlocked Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Processor

Komputerbay 32GB (4x 8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz DIMM with Heatspreaders 240-Pin RAM Desktop Memory 9-9-9-24 XMP ready

I don't have a graphics card because I was under the impression this motherboard and processor combination would not require a graphics card for a non-gaming machine, where this board already has ports such as DVI, VGA, HDMI, etc.

Upon boot without the memory I hear the system beeps.  With the memory in - NOTHING.... no display, no beeps!

What can I do to trouble shoot this?  My current thinking is this is a memory incompatibility problem?  If that's the case - is there a list of compatible/tested chips I could review before returning this set and failing on another?

Many thanks for your help!!!

   Welcome orbitwebsig

In an attempt to get it to boot....try putting in just one stick of memory into your boards slot 1 according to the boards manual and have another shot at booting ..... report back with your findings.....

A compatibility list can be found on the gigabyte website in the top right of the page under the applicable mother board model and version page.

Hi

You failed to mention what power supply unit that you have installed to run all this hardware. Make and model please ?

What case have you built it in or is it on the benchtop at the moment ?

I take it that you have a motherboard buzzer installed for the BIOS beeps ? I know you did mention the POST beeps without memory installed.

I tried just 1 chip in slot 1.  I get a long beep (like 3 seconds) and a pause, then a long beep, pause, and it continues that way.

I'm using an Antec Sonata III 500 Quiet Super Mid Tower ATX case and power supply:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QAVVAM/ref=oh_o01_s01_i00_details

Antec EA-500D is the model of the 500W power supply.

I looked at the list of tested memory and Komputerbay isn't even listed.  And sadly there was only 1 8GB chip listed - and that chip isn't on Amazon (I haven't searched elsewhere).  So now I'm getting nervous that if it is a memory issue I won't be able to find an 8GB chip that costs less than the car I drive and may have to return the mother board.  My goal was to get at minimum 32GB which I understood this board to be capable of supporting?

Many thanks to all of you for your responsiveness - good to know I'm not alone on this!!!

You just described the classic Award BIOS beep code for Memory error!....... not seated properly, crook memory or just totally incompatible  ....... check you're in the correct slot and try a second modules ..... unlikely to have two crook modules

Be as accurate as you can with the beep codes ..... besides on and off theres also two tones as well as fast and slow.

I would be inclined to forget your present memory sticks for the moment and get a couple of 4GB ones to try instead. Borrow them from a mate or something. If everything then works you can be certain it is down to compatibilty.

Ok so I'm back with no beeps if I set the memory in pairs (2 or 4 chips).  Is there an issue with this being an APU with on board graphics dependent upon the processor.  I would think that but then again when I have the chips in even - I still don't here the post beep - I thought there should be one of those?

If you can't follow DMs advice ( no memory available anywhere) it will / would make it a tad quicker to fault find.....

if you still cannot get a post signal to the speaker ... the obvious ones would be (Possible mind you at this stage) is damaged pins but un-likely with a AMD which leaves memory compatibility ..... bit of a circle isn't it until you can get your hands on some (even one) other memory to rule it out

Besides the point but worthy of a mention is the PSU power or the lack of it .....500W is on the bottom part of the recommended power curve ..... we generally recommend nothing under 650W and a quality single rail unit at that ...... cheap PSUs are just bad news eventually.

So while I'm searching for someone with some 4GGB chips available to test.... can you point me to 8GB chips that are likely to work with this board (or at least a chip vendor/style that is commonly used and has a good reputation with this kind of mobo?

I looked at the test list and there's only 1 8GB there.  I was hoping this machine could be maxed at 32GB, as the specs say it can?

My last resort would be to return the memory and MOBO/APU and start almost from square one again...

Many thanks again!!!

Just a thought, you haven't got "Quick Boot" enabled have you ? If you have that will stop any beep from the BIOS on POSTing.

As for looking for 8GB sticks try checking the memory manufacturer's website for their QVL for your motherboard.

It's a good thought, but does the mobo/BIOS ship with this enabled? I've yet to get into BIOS, as this was a new purchase. I wouldn't think it would come this way for troubleshooting reasons such (as the one I'm having)  :(

Also, I'm now looking at this RAM:
   Corsair 32 GB Dominator DDR3 1600MHz 240-Pin SDRAM CMP32GX3M4X1600C10

It's not on the list but at least the vendor is...

The Corsair Dominators are briliant RAM but I don't know if they are compatible with your system. You couild always email the vendor or manufacturer and ask if it is compatible.

Is the motherboard on Corsair's l;ist for that memory ?

Returned the Komputerbay chips - actually got the Cosair Vengeance 8GB chips - they works and I'm now happy w/32GB of RAM.  Thanks so much for your help!!!

That is great news anyway. I always advise buying good quality memory and everything else for that matter. How much did you have to pay for the 8GB sticks ?
