motherboard power circuitry whining noise
« on: February 17, 2012, 03:02:06 pm »
Hi all,
this is my problem (i don't know if there is a problem or not): when doing cpu stress test (ex.linX) i hear a low whining noise from the motherboard (this sound come from motherboard capacitors?).
motherboard is a ga-fx990-ud7 and the cpu is a phenom 1100t slightly overclocked (3.8ghz on all cores with 1.344v max on full load - cpu temp is ok...on full load 51 max - power supply is an ocz z series 850w)..
system is very stable but when linx start stress test i hear this slightly whining noise.
i've tried with fx 8150 and the whining noise is slightly higher than with the phenom.
is this normal? or i must be worried about that??
thanks for all answers.

First thing i would of done is get a different  PSU and try it with that.   Durring a stress test you are consuming alot of power and the part that shows it as much or more than the motherboard is the PSU.  You tried a different CPU wouldnt hurt to try a different PSU if you can. Might narrow it down a bit..

After that if you a running a video card try a different one. I am assuming that when you tried a different cpu you also used a different cpu cooler and is why i am skipping that step. If after all this your motherboard still whines and you feel uncomportable with it contact gigabyte support, they will probably suggest a RMA to be safe. Or they might have run across it and know exactly what it is. I have used 3 to 4 hundred motherboards and not 1 whines so id say it isnt normall.

problem solved!!! fortunately it was not the mainboard but psu....i've changed it and it's ok...silent pc.....and has gone away videocard-gpu electric noise too...!!!!!!!!!but there is a thing that i don't understand: i've used a lot of psu during these years (700w-850w ocz-cooler master-enermax) but every NEW psu when gpu was under load (furmark o crysis) was always rumorous....i thought that was videocard but instead was psu....but why a new 850w psu (with others psu it was the same thing) should be rumorous? with only a gtx580???? i know that gtx 580 is power hungry but there is a lot of room in a 850w.... i thought that with only one videocard psu should be silent if it is a 700w or 850w....am i wrong? because it is not possible that all my previous new psu was all defective......

Hi

Extraneous noises can be extrememly hard to track down especially when they are not there constantly. Often as autotech said this is often caused by the PSU or a combination of components. Quite often it is caused by coil whine but capacitors can also cause it. The trouble is that it is usually a combination of more than one item and so it can be hard to say what actually makes it happen.
