Gigabyte 970a-ud3 Ram issue

I have put together a new computer. Yet I am having problems with the ram Mhz and timing. The board stats it has support for DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules. I have Patriot Viper II ‘Sector 7’ Edition 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000).

While I know the board doesn't support 2000 without overclocking. When I try to set the memory to 1866 as on auto it reads it at 1066. When I set it to 1866 and leave everything else on auto. I reboot I get this "The system has experienced boot failures because of overclocking. As I tried to set it to 1866 the top it supports before overclocking. I am stumped trying to figure out why it will not read at 1866 and load properly.

Can someone please help me. Maybe I am missing something.

Hi there,

well the first thing to ask is what other hardware are you using, especially CPU?

Remove one of the sticks of RAM as you have bought a triple channel kit, which is really meant for the Intel X58 platform.
You will also need to increase the RAM Voltage as your modules are rated at 1.65V and the board will default to 1.5V

Ok what I am running is

Windows 7 Ultimate
amd fx(tm)-8120 Eight Core Processor 3.10GHz
Patriot Viper II ‘Sector 7’ Edition 8GB (2x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000).
2 - GeForce GTX 550ti's
High Current Gamer 750W Gamer Power Supply HCG-750
2 - 120 Gb sata 3 hard drivesi

I tried what you said and turned the DRam Voltage up to 1.65. When the computer went to reboot, I got nothing just a black screen. Had to take the little batter out of the computer and let it set a bit. Put the battery back in booted up and reset optimized setting in bios. I have more then enough to handle well beyond the 1066. But for some reason it keeps going back to the default. Can't remember the last time I have been this frustrated. 5:30 in the morning and I am still at it.

Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help you are giving me.

Sorry another question (don't you just hate all these questions?), which BIOS version are you using?

Okay I got past that part. I knew I was over looking something.

Now when it boots and goes to load windows. I get different errors every time. If I set it back windows boots perfect. I need some help getting the tweaks right.

I ran cpuz and it showed me to tweak the values like this.

frequency 1000MHz
cas#Latency 9.0
Ras# to CAS# 11
RAS# Precharge 9.0
tRAS 27
TRC 50
Command Rate 2t
Voltage 1.65

Just need some help getting the tweak right so windows can properly load. Just don't know where to adjust first. Can anyone help me with this?

Hi again,

Before making any changes I would double check that you have the RAM in the correct slots on the motherboard. They should be inserted into slots DDR3_1 (furthest away from CPU) and DDR3_2. This is worth checking as it is easy to put them into the wrong slots, I know, because I've done that!

To alter the timings and the DRAM Voltage you need to be in the MIT Section of BIOS and go to the sub-menu DRAM Configuration.
Change the Set Memory clock from auto to manual and set the speed here, x6.66 for 1300MHz, X8 for 1600MHz etc.
Check that DCTs Mode is set to Unganged
Change DDR3 Timing Items from Auto to Manual this unlocks the options below it allowing you to input the SPD Data manually.
Leave 1T/2T Command Timing on Auto then input the correct values for your RAM in the subsequent rows.

If you are still having problems after doing this then I would recommend running MemTest to see if the RAM is faulty.

Yea I finally figured it out. I had all the settings correct. But for some reason because the DRAM E.O.C.P was disabled it wouldn't allow it. But when I set the DRAM E.O.C.P to 2000 everything fell in place. Just weird that setting was stopping it from processing. I guess it was because it set the CPU Clock Ratio, Cpu frequency and the Cpu NorthBridge to their correct settings. Knew it was something simple I was over looking.


But, after 6 liters of mountain dew and no sleep . It is now starting up and running at 2000MHz. I am a happy camper.

Also tyvm for helping me out of the jam. Good to see there are still people around that help.
