GA-fx990xa-ud5 fx8320 RAM problems
« on: December 09, 2013, 03:18:06 am »
I have the above with 8GB Corsair Extreme sport 12800.  When I run memory benchmarks the ram benchmarks about 60 of what it should be.  In passmark I get a benchmark of about 7500 vs over 13000 for the same ram in my dell with an i5 3330.  I have checked to make sure I have the RAM in the proper slots (currently slot 1 and slot 2).  I have heard about other gigabyte motherboards not utilizing dual channel RAM properly.  Any suggestions.  RAM is recognized as 1600 MHz in BIOS.  Currently running 8.1 but same problem with Windows 7.   Thanks for your help.

What tests are you running? If I run Passmark PerformanceTest 8.0 I get:

Memory Mark = 1413
Memory - Database Operations = 49.3
Memory - Read Cached = 19595
Memory - Read Uncached = 6854
Memory - Write = 5394
Memory - Available RAM = 5823
Memory - Latency = 59.9
Memory - Threaded = 20798

I have a  GA-990FXA-UD3 1.0 with a FX8350. RAM is G.SKILL RipjawsX 12800 2x4GB.

Thanks for the replies.  I ran passmark 8.0 and came up with a memory mark of 1354.  All of the other benchmarks are similar to what AgentFXA posted.  When I run passmark with my dell i660 (i3330, 12GB ddr3 12800) I get the following scores

memory mark = 2218
memory - database operations = 79.1
memory - read cached =  22622
memory - read uncached = 12904
memory - write = 9388
memory - available ram = 6260
memory - latency = 27.1
memory - threaded = 22726

I guess my question is my FX8320 setup has a memory rating about 40% lower than the Intel i5 computer.  My overall system rating with the FX8320 is 2360 vs 3366 for the i3330 which is almost a 50% performance difference. Video cards and SSD drives I am using are similar in both systems.   Am I missing something in the comparison?  I would think RAM operating at the same speed would give similar results.  I can understand a small difference but a 40% difference is huge.  Why do I get lower performance from the AMD setup vs Intel?  I was under the impression the FX processors would give similar performance to 3rd gen i5 processors.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Personally I don't favour any benchmark results - while Intel has a certain technology advantage over AMD (mainly bigger caches) you pay dearly for that brand. On the other hand most benchmarks favour Intel over AMD (score mark ups due to Intel friendly testing methods). There is a lot of cheating in that scene.

I doubt very much there is a 40% (real life) ram performance difference coz my few games like FarCry3, 2x Crysis all run perfectly smooth even under DX11 - do I want more? nope! There is a FX performance patch for Win7 which is hardly known (core parking) .. you see there is a lot of intentional AMD discrimination out there.

The late FX CPUs (vishera) are perfectly fine in terms of performance and much better value for money than Intel.

Yes I've read not to put to much stock in benchmarks and overall I'm happy with the way my new build is running.  Thanks for the info and yes, the price savings going with AMD was significant.
